Samuel M. Hudson II, 88, passed away Monday, June 25, 2018, in Parkersburg, WV, with his wife of 65 years at his side.

He was born in Marysville, TN and graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV. Sam was a businessman and entrepreneur. His career included owning a meat loscker business, managing road construction in Texas, working for the family business, Red Head oil and Gas, working in property acquisition for Ashland Oil , owner and operator of HUDCO, Hudson Petroleum Company and HUDCO Tire Service. His hobbies included farming, raising Angus cattle land development, piloting small planes, traveling, playing bridge and Rotary. He was a longtime member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg. Sam lived in Lewisburg in his youth and retirement, also residing through the years in Cleveland and Canton, Ohio, and San Marcus, TX, and raising his family in Wooster, OH.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Hellen Hudson; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Hudson
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Tate Hudson; sister, Helen Stabler; children, Walter Hudson, Samuel Hudson III (Cynthia, Laura Warren (Terry) and William Hudson (Cindy); grandchildren, Natalie Warren (Dan Patterson) Caroline Meyer (Anthony) , Michael Hudson, Daniel Hudson, Samuel Hudson IV, Claire Hudson and Catherine Hudson; great-granddaughters, Harper Patterson and Madison Meyer; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Dudley Flanders; sister-in-law Charlotte Hobson; and his faithful dog, Alice.

David F. Sayer Jr. of Charleston, formerly of Logan, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018, of natural causes. He was 80 years old, the son of David F. Sayer and Zakia Sayer. He graduated from The Greenbrier Military School and Ohio State University. He was Co-Owner of Sayer Brothers department stores throughout West Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marlene Nicholas, and brother, Alex F. Sayer II. David is survived by his brother, Farris D. Sayer; sisters, Lorraine Ghareeb (Fauzy) and Christine Husson (Bruce); as well as his nephews and nieces, Nicky Nicholas, Jacqueline Mason (Jason), David Husson (Mindy), Jonathan Husson, Christin Husson, Alex Ghareeb (Amilia); and all his many great - nephews and great - nieces whom he dearly loved.

He will be remembered as a wonderful brother, a devoted son, and a loving Uncle. The family wishes to give special thanks to all of his loving caretakers who provided him great comfort.

Funeral service will be noon Wednesday, June 6, at Village Chapel Presbyterian Church, 3818 Venable Avenue, Charleston, WV 25304. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dr. Carl J. Arnold, age 89, of Derby Lane passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at his home.
He was born in Bristol, VA and was the son of the late J. Carl and Martha C. Arnold.
Dr. Arnold attended Elementary and High School education in Bristol and Abington, VA and graduated from Greenbrier military School in Lewisburg, WV in 1946. He later received his Bachelor of Science in 1951, his Masters in 1952 from Virginia Tech, and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1958. He was a faculty member at Virginia Tech, the University of Florida Rollins College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Arnold was awarded and achieved many honors during his time in academia, he was awarded and achieved many honors during his time in academia, he was awarded the Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics and Business Administration from Presbyterian College, the Professor of the year award for the University of Florida and Presbyterian College, and the Distinguished Service Award from Presbyterian College and College Annual Dedication from Presbyterian College in 1980. He was a member of the Methodist faith and was active in church work and activities in Abingdon VA, Blacksburg, VA and Winter Park FL, and was a member of the Lions Club in Blacksburg, VA.
Dr. Arnold is survived by his wife, Nancy of the home, his daughter , Sandra Ellen Lambert of Dallas, TX; his grandchildren, Leah Lambert, Erin Lambert, and Matt Lambert; and his four great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held, Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 3:00PM at Edmunds Hall at Presbyterian College.

Douglas “Doug” Harry Jennings Sr. was born in Bluefield, WV on August 22, 1935 to Harry Kenneth and Eleanor Sally Jennings. Doug was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carol, of 58 years. He is survived by his son, Douglas H. Jennings (Debbie) of Sarasota, FL; and daughter Carolyn Hawthorne of Jacksonville, FL. Three granddaughters, Vanessa, Stephanie, and Sally; and his sister, Patricia (Ralph) Pike of Baton Rouge LA, nephew Brian (Deanna) Pike of North Palm Beach FL and niece Charlene (Joe) Pryor of Oklahoma City, OK.

Doug attended and graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV. After graduation, he moved to Orlando, FL where he met the love of his life carol Joyce Jennings (Sauerbraun). They were married for 58 wonderful years and had two children. Beyond his love for his family, Doug was extremely fond of the farm he had in Hillsville, VA. This is where he and Carol raised cattle and spent a majority of their vacations. The Grainger/Jennings farm was his second love. Doug was also an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, boxing, and football. He was a world-class huntsman and a member of the Safari Club International.

Doug was a distinguished member of the United States Army Military Police during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Fort Gordon, GA from 1956-1957. Doug was an astute businessman. He attended Rollins College where he focused his studies on business. In 1955, he attended Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He held his internship at Carey-Hand Funeral Home in Orlando FL. Upon coming a licensed Funeral Director, he moved to Hollywood, Florida where he worked for Wadington Funeral Home.

In 1963, Doug opened his first funeral home (Jennings Funeral Home) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida . Jennings Funeral Home expanded to a second location in Tamarac, FL in 1969. He continued to grow his businesses with the purchase of Lakeland Memorial Funeral and Good Sheppard Memorial Gardens in Ocala, FL In 1992, Doug sold his funeral home in South Florida and together with his son Douglas, operated Jennings/Archway Funeral Home and Good Sheppard Memorial Gardens until it was sold in 1997. In addition to his extensive career in the funeral industry, Doug was also a proficient real estate developer who had a keen eye for investment as well as a founding board member of Landmark Bank in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Doug was also generous with his time, as he was actively involved in community service and the growth of volunteerism through various service clubs in Florida. He was a proud 32nd Degree mason (Doric Lodge) in Ft. Lauderdale, York Rite, active member of the Shrine Club, member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court 88; a Rotarian at the Downtown FT. Lauderdale Chapter he was also a member of the Angler’s Club in New Smyrna Beach as well as the New Smyrna Beach Yacht Club.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens on Friday, April 27, 2018, from 12 – 2P.M. with a short service to follow.

Doug returned to Greenbrier for the 1955 school year for his freshman year in college. He also was Cadet Major for that school year

Richard "Dickie" Booker Dalton, 85, died Saturday, February 24, 2018 in Kingsport, TN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Rigney Dalton.

He was born on November 11, 1932, in Bluefield, WV, the son of the late Grady William Dalton and Freda Louisa Howell Dalton.

After having moved Richlands in 1940, he was a graduate of Richlands High School, greenbrier Military School, Emory and Henry College, and the American Institute of banking.

After shaving served his country in the Air force during the Korean War, he was employed as a banker at the Richlands National bank. An active member of his community, he was involved in various organizations including the Richlands Kiwanis Club and the Richlands Moose Lodge. He was passionate about Karate, earning his black belt when he was 57 years old and delighted to teach anyone who asked or anyone who just stood still too long.

He is survived by his daughter, Anne Freya Dalton, and two grandchildren, Charles Spurgeon Booth III and Marianne Dalton Boothe.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, VA. An M11:00 a.m. Memorial Service will be held with the Rev. Tim Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands where Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post # 9640, Richlands, VA.

RICHARD Z. “DICK” MACDONALD
Dick Macdonald grew up in Idlewild Park, learning from his father how to operate the family’s Ligonier Township amusement park.
When he and his brother C.K., known as Jack, took over management of the family-oriented attraction in 1957, Dick took delight in fulfilling his father’s vision for the adjoining Storybook Forest ---- where children could come face-to=-face with characters from their favorite fairytales and nursery rhymes.
“He was very instrumental in that whole idea coming to fruition,” said his daughter, Susan Grill.
Richard Z. “Dick” Macdonald died at home of natural causes Tuesday, January 2, 2018. He was 95.
Mr. Macdonald served as president of that park offshoot.
“he felt that would be fun to do” said his wife, Mary Ann. “he would work with an artist and make plans for the different fairytales.
Featured Characters included Humpty Dumpty, the three little pigs, and a knight who stood guard in a castle, speaking to visitors.
One of his favorite additions to Storybook Forest was a general store that offered patrons penny candy and antique toys.
“He drew up the plans for that” his wife recalled. We went down to Williamsburg and kind of copied from them.
Mr. Macdonald was a familiar sight on the park grounds, making sure all was well and mingling with the visitors.
“He liked seeing the people have fun”, his wife said.
Born in Cuyahoga Fall, Ohio, on Feb. 13, 1922, Mr. Macdonald was a son of the Clinton C. and Grace R. Macdonald.
A graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV., Mr. Macdonald attended Penn State University until he enlisted in the Air Force in
World War II. Initially stationed in Burtonwood, England, to serve as a test pilot.
His love of planes began when he built models as a child
After the war, he continued to fly his private plane until he was 81, making regular trips to reunions at Greenbrier. Other passions included fly fishing, trap shooting and dancing with his wife.
Hwe enjoyed rounding up cattle on horseback at the couple’s Rich Hollow Farm, where he provided winter shelter for goats featured in the park.
When the family’s next generation opted to pursue other interests, the brothers sold the park to Kennywood in January, 1983.
Mr. Macdonald stayed busy volunteering for the local Meals on Wheels program. He also donated trees to the Ligonier Valley Chamber of commerce, the Ligonier Valley Library and the Ligonier Valley Historical Society.
“He wa always considerate and a very caring person, and he enjoyed life,” his wife said.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Macdonald was preceded in death by his brother and sister, Virginia Hand.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years; three children, Zanne Macdonald of Charlottesville, VA., Susan Grill and her husband, Erik, of Ligonier, and Richard of Sandpoint, Idaho; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the spring. Thomas L. Nied Funeral Home of Pittsburg is in charge of arrangements.

John Russell McLaughlin Jr, 89, passed away at his beloved farm with his family by his side early Tuesday morning, December 26, 2017.

Born January 20, 1928 in beaver, he was a son of the late John R. McLaughlin and Carolyn Dillon McLaughlin. After his graduation from Beaver High School in 1946, John went on to study at the Greenbrier Military School in 1947, before graduating from Grove City College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Drafted that same year, he served proudly in the U. S. Army during the Korean War until 1952. Upon his return to his hometown, he married JoEtta “Nicky” Zerby in June 1953. John, a third-generation realtor, joined the family real estate firm Bovard-Anderson Company in 1953, becoming a partner with his father in 1972, and later, with his own son Edwards in January of 1992. A leader in his field, John served as President of the Beaver County Board of Realtors in 1966 and 1967, and was recognized as Realtor of the year in 1977.

One of beaver’s staunchest advocates, John lent his talents and expertise to a wide variety of community organizations, including the 4-H Program, Stockman club, and the Beaver Rotary Club where he served as a former member and past president. He was a lifelong member of the Beaver United Methodist Church, a Paul Harris Fellow Member, and the former Chairman of the Brighton Township Zoning Hearing board. The capstone of John’s life of service would be his work with the Beaver Heritage Foundation where he served as a charter member of the Board of Trustees for the beaver Area Heritage Museum and Log House. In 2013, he was awarded the Beaver Area Heritage Civic Leadership Award for his tireless contributions to this popular local landmark.

A modern renaissance man, John reveled in his love of nature as an avid fisherman and hunter and Penn State Master gardener. His curiosity and creativity led him to dabble in all sorts of art media, including pottery, met sculptures, and wood carvings. In his spare time, he could also be found in search of antiques or researching his next stock pick as an investor with the Jolly Boys Investment Club.

For those who knew and loved John, he will be remembered as a great friend to many, wonderful son and brother, loving husband, cherished father to his five children, and unforgettable Papa to his twelve grandchildren.
John sill be sadly missed by his wife and partner of 64 years, Nicky McLaughlin, Beaver, his children; Lynn (Joseph) Smith, Pittsburg, Emily (Dee Brandon) McLaughlin, NYC, Edwards (Jacqueline Crowley) McLaughlin, Beaver, Ellen (Ed) Ardey, Lorton, VA, and Susan (Brian) Brown, Brighton Twp; grandchildren; and one brother, George (Suzanne) McLaughlin, Millbrook, NY.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his youngest granddaughter, Julia Brown.

Funeral services were held at beaver Methodist Church on Friday, December 29, 2017 with the Noll Funeral Home of Beaver providing services to the family.

Robert Christian Parker, age 81, of Minneapolis, passed away October 19, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Dorothy Parker, and one brother, James Parker.

He is survived by his loving children, Krisann (and spouse Nicola) Evoli of Minneapolis and Forrest (and spouse Kimberly) Parker, of Charleston, S.C., two sisters, Susan Harris and Peggy Crofoot and three grandchildren: Madeleine Brown, Justin and Jesse Shafer.

As a young man, Chris attended the Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, W.Va. He served his country in the U.S. Navy, later attending the U.S. Naval Academy. He would go on to earn a master's degree in organic chemistry from West Virginia University.

Accomplished in his field as a chemist, Chris garnered 11 patents during his career. He was a passionate cook, gifted watercolor painter, award winning marksman and golfer.

Funeral service is Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5730 Grove St., Edina, MN 55436, (952) 929-0049. Visitation one hour prior. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery to follow at 1:45 p.m. Memorials preferred to Minnesota Veterans Home activities fund.

James Edward Arbaugh Obituary
August 1, 1931-September 10, 2017
For Coach Arbs, the ball is over the goal line, the final touchdown scored, the playbook lovingly closed after a darn good run for the self-professed "little old country boy" from the hills of West Virginia.
Born in 1931 to Glessie and Elmer Arbaugh in the Greenbrier Valley, he kept those mountains, hollers, and rivers alive in his heart. He grew up in and around Lewisburg, W.Va., and it was there that he met his life-long love, Twinkle Montgomery (or Edith, as some know her). He served in Korea in the U.S. Marines and graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy. In 1953, on a summer night, Jim took Twinkle out for an evening at the West Virginia State Fair but instead of gliding in circles on Ferris wheels they eloped. As the evening ended in a little church in Waynesboro, Va., they proffered vows to be lived out over the next sixty-four years then drove southeast to Charlottesville to settle in to a new home as students in the School of Education at the University of Virginia. Jim served as an athletic trainer after his football-playing start was ended by a shoulder injury. They became young parents and raised four childrenMichael Arbaugh, Linda Arbaugh Kinnahan, Fran Arbaugh, and Jim Arbaugh, Jr. Later, Jim wholeheartedly welcomed into the family Thomas Kinnahan (husband of Linda) and Lynne Nichols (wife of Jim, Jr.), and he greeted his granddaughter Chloes birth with all the love in the world.

Jim began his long career of high school teaching and coaching in Powhatan, Virginia before returning to Charlottesville to coach football at Albemarle High School for many good years with his dear and steadfast friend Ralph Harrison. His sometimes-toughness was mingled with a soft-hearted warmth in the deep devotion he felt toward the young students and athletes he served. From them, he learned about the breadth and depth of human kindness, perseverance, and connection. At Western Albemarle High School in his final years of teaching, he coached the mellower game of golf and commanded the driving range, teaching students behind the wheel while Twinkle taught art at WAHS.
Once he retired from teaching, he upped his golf game and joined an irascible crew of fellow former football coaches at UVas Birdwood Golf Course to "work" part time and play a few rounds a week. In a long and full retirement, he swung at many a golf ball in the back yard of the family home during the fifty years he and Twinkle lived there. Their house, filled with antiques from Sunday afternoons prowling junk shops, was where they welcomed their children and granddaughter (and various pets, including his all-time favorite dogs, Bitsy and Jasmine). He and Twinkle travelled far and wide taking wine-rich trips to Italy, Spain, and France, enjoying good times with many, many friends made over many, many years in Charlottesville, driving back to his beautiful West Virginia mountains to laugh and share memories with family there. In his final years, Jim spent Friday mornings with brush in hand in painting lessons with his Twinkle and joined by his old buddy Joe May. He created brightly colored abstract paintings full of the circular rhythms of a long, long life.

Jim adored his wife with all of his heart and she never ceased in his mind to be the most talented, beautiful, smart, kind woman in the world. He was a brother to his wifes Montgomery siblingsHerbert (and wife Katy) Montgomery, Mary (and husband Paul) Lindquist, Johnny (and wife Joyce) Montgomery, and Joan Montgomeryand a beloved "Uncle Jimmy" to his nieces and nephew who, like his own children and their friends, often found his words of advice, whether invited or not, bracingly honest, inevitably helpful, and motivated by love. He loved his children fiercely, instilling in them a belief in the bond of family and the tending necessary to keep that bond strong. Intensely loyal to his friends and family, he was generous with his warmth and laughter and, as those who knew him can attest, his unrestrained opinions.
His granddaughter Chloe Kinnahan brought him a special joy from the moment she showed up twenty-three years ago. She has always had a special place in his heart. She inherited his eyes blue as the sky and his heart big as the moon. His family will love that heart forever, and for us, that light will always shine.

William Clark Manning, 63, son of the late William French and Elda Cozort Manning passed away following a short illness, Thursday, September 7, 2017.

Born June 26, 1954 in Mullens, WV he was a loving husband, wonderful father, kind and loyal friend. He was a 1972 graduate of Greenbrier Military School and attended Marshall University and West Virginia University. He was self-employed for many years and was disabled after working for Patriot Coal as a warehouse clerk. He was a member of Oceana United Methodist Church.

He was a civil servant as Town Councilman and Recorder for the Town of Oceana for nineteen years.

He loved the Cincinnati Reds, WVU Mountaineers, '60's and '70's oldies and the town of Oceana.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Altizer.

Clark is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Kathy LaDoucer Manning, daughters, Lauren LeAyn and Jordan Elizabeth; sisters, Marian O'Connell and husband, Tom of Clinton, MD and Anita Wilson and husband, Bob of Greenville, TN; brother-in-law, Ronald Altizer; sisters-in-law, Debra LaDoucer and Lisa Taylor; nieces, nephews and many friends. His furry companions, Gibbs, Hatteras and Bodie will also miss him.

A celebration of life will be 4pm, Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Evans-Calfee Funeral Chapel, 1081 Cook Parkway with the Rev. Ronald Acord officiating. The family will receive friends from 2pm until time of service at the funeral home. Cremation will follow.

Jack Kendall Carte passed away at Good Living Assisted Living Home in Malden on August 10, 2017. Jack was born in Charleston on Fort Hill on July 21, 1923, followed minutes later by his identical twin, John Motley Carte. He was the son of Virgil and Elizabeth Carte. A 1942 graduate of Charleston High School, he also attended Greenbrier Military School for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1944. He served with the Alaskan Defense Command for two years.

He married Mary Sue Baldridge in 1950, and they raised three children in Charleston before he re-enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1963. He and the family then moved to overseas postings during the 1960s. The first posting was with Strategic Communication Command at Kagnew Station in Asmara, Eritrea; this was later followed by three years with the Defense Liaison Office at the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong. He then went on to serve a one-year duty tour in Vietnam in 1970, returning to Fort Rucker, Ala., which remained the family residence until 2001. Retired with the rank of Sergeant Major from his last duty post in 1982, he served as Senior Enlisted Personnel Manager in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort MacPherson, Atlanta, Ga. At retirement, he was awarded the Legion of Merit in recognition of exceptional meritorious conduct while serving there. He was also a recipient of a Bronze Star for his Vietnam service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Carte (1999); son, Byron Kendall Carte (2004); sister, Ruth Townsend (2011); and brother, John M. Carte (2013). In later years, Jack and Betty J. Leonard, former high school classmates, shared several years of loving companionship together before her passing in 2010.

He is survived by daughters, Sharon L. Carte, South Charleston, and Connie Hirth, Washington, D.C.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, at Bollinger Funeral Home on Lee Street, Charleston, followed immediately by a service at 2 p.m. Graveside service at Mountain View Memorial Park will be a private service for the family.

Robert A. Hogsett, age 86, of Richmond, VA departed this life to be with the Lord and Savior on July 18, 2017. He had been a member of the Bon Air Baptist Church since 1970 and served as a Deacon. Mr. Hogsett was predeceased by his former wife of 48 years, Ruth-Ann; and his second wife of nine years Jean-Ann. He is survived by his daughter’s family, Roberta and Stan Lee (with Robbie and Michelle); his son’s family, Richard and Lisa Hogsett (with Adam Hogsett, Andrew and Alysha Hogsett (with Lila and Oakley), and Mathew and Sarah Hogsett), Andrew and Alysha Hogsett (with Lila and Oakley), and Mathew and Sarah Hogsett); his daughter’s family, Rebecca and Brent Jones (with Tiffany); and his son’s family, Russell and Tanya Hogsett (with Alex and Samantha).
Mr. Hogsett grew up in Virginia and West Virginia. He graduated from Greenbrier Military School and West Virginia University. He served in Korea (1953-54) as an officer with the 5th Regimental Combat Team RTC.
Bob started his civilian career in the Westinghouse Air Conditioning Division and later joined Cargill Advertising Agency and later the A.H. Robbins Pharmaceuticals Corp. headquartered in Richmond, VA., with whom he spent 30 years. He was inducted into the “AHR Hall of Fame” as the Director of Promotional Services.
He also maintained his support of the U.S. Military by serving in the Army reserves for 20 years attaining the rank of Major, and later helped organize the Virginia Defense Force (VADF) where he volunteered for 20 years more as Director of Public Affairs with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

CURTIS HARBERT OBITUARY

SHERMAN - Curtis Lankford Harbert Jr. passed away June 15, 2017 at his home surrounded by his wife of 39 years and his family.

Curtis was born December 2, 1944 in Madison, West Virginia to the late Curtis Lankford Harbert Sr. and Aubrie (Farrell) Harbert.
Curtis was married to Mary Louise Beck on March 25, 1978 in Las Vegas, Nevada and later renewed their vows again in Las Vegas on their 20 anniversary.
Curtis worked and retired from Texas Instruments after 20 years in 2004. He enjoyed being a private pilot in his free time and spending his time with his wife after his retirement.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Harbert of Sherman; son, Curtis Harbert and wife Linda of North Carolina; daughter, Cathy Rilay and husband Ron of Kentucky; son, Marcus Harbert and wife Carrie of Kentucky; step children, Sharon Merquez and husband Henry of Arizona, Michael Spilker of Arizona, Sandra Anglin of Kentucky; sister, Betty Smith of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; 7great grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his step daughter, Susan Curtis.
