In Loving Memory - John J. Hadley - 7/14/1943 - 4/13/2013

John J. Hadley,69, of Marietta, OH, died at his residence on Saturday, April 13, 2013, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born on July 14, 1943, in Marietta, OH, a son of the late Harold B. and Virginia M. Sendelbeck Hadley.

He attended Washington Elementary School, Marietta, OH, Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, WV, and graduated from Marietta High School in 1961 where he was a member of the 1959 undefeated Marietta Tiger football team. He attended Marietta College, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, and graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1965.

He proudly served the Marietta area community as a funeral director for nearly 50 years, helping people in one of life's most difficult times of need.

John was appointed to the Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for the State of Ohio and served 3 terms, a total of 15 years, as one of five funeral directors selected by the governor for the position. In this capacity, he enjoyed meeting and mentoring young apprentices and helping to prepare them for careers as funeral directors as well as ensuring the integrity of the funeral profession throughout the state of Ohio.

He was honored to further serve the Marietta community as a member of the Board of Directors of Settlers Bank.

He was a lifetime member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Marietta, OH.

John was a member of Harmar Lodge #390, F & AM, Marietta, OH. Also, he was a member of Nemesis Shrine, Parkersburg, WV, where he proudly served as Potentate in 2008. His devotion to the fellowship and philanthropy of the Shrine was unparalleled. He was a member of Marietta Shrine Club, Marietta, OH (Past President 1977), Central WV Shrine Club, Clarksburg, WV, Lewis County Shrine Club, Weston, WV, Ohio Valley Shrine Club, Parkersburg, WV, Wirt County Shrine Club, Elizabeth, WV, and Tyler County Shrine Club, Sistersville, WV, where he was appointed as liason beginning in 1998 and where he truly belonged. He was an honorary member of the Motorized Unit of Nemesis Shrine and a member of Ben Bey Grotto, Parkersburg, WV.

He was a devoted member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court #156, Parkersburg, WV, where he served as Director in 1999 and as Impresario since 2000. He also acted as President of South Atlantic Shrine Association Jesters in 2005. "Digger" was a member of Jesters on Wheels and loved riding his custom purple Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

John was the Chairman of the City of Marietta, OH, National Clean-Up Campaign from 1967-1970 during which time Marietta won an award for being one of the 10 best small cities in the country. He also won the Outstanding Young Man Award in 1967-1968 from the Marietta Jaycees.

He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks #477, Marietta, OH, and Loyal Order of Moose #1823, Marietta, OH. John also was a member of the Professional Car Society, where he served 3 years as President.

John is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Barbara Lois Bonar Hadley whom he married on June 21, 1980. He is also survived by his son John "Rob" Hadley (Pamela) and their children Kyle (Kathryn) and Trevan O'Keefe and Desiree Schmitz of Marietta, OH, his daughters Jamie Hadley Godsey (Craig) of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Lois Virginia Hadley Beckman (Matt) of Gahanna, OH, and his brother H. Lee Hadley (Ruth) of Newport, OH.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike Street, Marietta, OH with Roger Rush and Pastor Steve Mahaffey officiating. Visitation will be observed all day on Tuesday April 16 at the funeral home. The family requests that donations be made in John's name to Nemesis Shrine Center, 244 Watson Road, Parkersburg, WV 26102.
