Chester W. Mooney, Jr. (Age 82)
Died on January 28, 2012 at his home, Sunrise of Alexandria. Chester is survived by his sister, Lorrine Brueil, a son and two grandchildren. Chester served in the Air Force, Army, and Army Reserve during WWII and Korea.

Chester was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV. He was a life member of the school's alumni association.

He retired from Giant Foods after 44 years of service. A Memorial Service will be held on February 10, 2012, at 1:30 p.m., at Sunrise of Alexandria, 3520 Duke Street, Alexandria. A reception hosted by Tina Svenson will follow the service. Interment will be in Vermont in the spring. His family and friends would like to thank the staff of Sunrise for their help and friendship

KROPP Walter H. Kropp, passed away on January 9, 2012 at the Wesley Ridge English Garden in Reynoldsburg. Mr. Kropp was a retired Savings and Loan Association Executive and prominent Mason. He was the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Franklin Federal, Ohio Federal, and Mid America Federal Savings and Loan Associations of Columbus, Ohio. He retired in 1987. He was a distinguished 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and served as the Presiding Officer and Deputy for Ohio, along with notable service on the governing Board of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite in Lexington, Massachusetts. He functioned as a former member and officer of many Boards including; President of the Board of Trustees of the Columbus Public Library, Executive Committee of the United States League of Savings Institutes, Chairman of the Ohio League of Savings Associations, Thrift Advisory Committee to the Federal Reserve Board in Washington D.C., Vice Chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, Camco Financial Corporation of Cambridge, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Elford Inc General Contractors, Columbus Home Builders Association, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Treasurer of the First Congregational Church, Downtown Kiwanis Club, Bexley Historical Society, the Columbus Club, and the Athletic Club of Columbus. During World War II, he served with distinction as an Infantry Captain in Italy and Germany, and was awarded the Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star and two Silver Star Medals for valor. He attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, West Virginia, Denison University, and Ohio State University in Ohio. He was predeceased by his mother and father Vernon Rose Shawaker Kropp and Walter C. Kropp, and two brothers Franklin A. Kropp and Richard V. Kropp. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Thornburgh Kropp; son, Walter B. and Kathy Kropp of Columbus; and son, Karl V. Kropp and Julia Sullivan of Reston, Virginia. Also beloved grand-children, Walter W. (Will) and Sarah Jane Kropp of Columbus, Richard A., Andrew K., Patrick R., and Karl Aidan Kropp-Sullivan of Reston. He was an active member of the Athletic Club of Columbus and an avid golfing member of the Columbus Country Club. Thomas Jay Trageser, a custom carpenter and builder, died Tuesday at his mother's home in Erie after a prolonged illness. He was 60. Born in Cleveland, Mr. Trageser was the son of Helen Trageser, and the late William Trageser. He attended Millcreek public and parochial schools, and the Greenbrier Military School, in Lewisburg, W. Va. He graduated from McDowell High School in 1969. In 1971, he married Carol Bebell, in Erie, and the couple moved to a home they built in Venango, Pa. He was employed as a salesman for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. until 1989, when the family moved to Arlington, Va. There, he established Trageser & Assoc., doing custom carpentry and commercial construction in the Washington, D.C. area. He closed the business and retired five years ago. Mr. Trageser had a big appetite for life, was great fun to be with, and never lost touch with his many close friends in the Erie area. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and also had a love of photography, golf, and pinochle, which he was playing with friends just hours before his death. In addition to his wife of 40 years, Mr. Trageser is survived by his mother, Helen Trageser, of Erie; two brothers, John of Millersville, Md., and his wife, Karen, and Andrew of Pittsburgh, and his wife, Susan. Also, three sisters, Christine Roylance of Cockeysville, Md., and her husband, Frank, Terry Colwell of Corry, Pa., and her husband, John, and Wendy Onorato, of Erie, and her husband, Paul. Also surviving are his son, Casey, daughter-in-law, Jackie; and grandson, Nathaniel, all of Woodbridge, Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom was preceded in death by a daughter, Katie Ann, in 1984, and a son, Todd, in 1991. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd., and are invited there on Friday for the funeral service at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. John Dyke. Burial will follow at the Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3642 W. 26th St., Erie, PA 16506.

Charles Lewis Young, 85, of Charleston left this world while at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston Sunday, December 11, 2011 surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Charlie was born January 9, 1926 in Charleston and was the eldest son of Otmer M. and Thelma B. Young. As a young man he attended Greenbrier Military School and then graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. After graduation Charlie enlisted in the Navy and served his country in various places, including Australia, during World War II. After the war, Charlie returned home and became an integral part of the family restaurant, the Quarrier Diner, as well as attending Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston.

Charlie married and had three daughters by his first wife, Marjorie Ann (French) Young. His first wife left this world prematurely, but Charlie made an extra special effort to be both father and mother to his three daughters. Whenever possible he would take them skiing, to the family farm in Ripley or on a vacation to a place they had never been. Over the next 50 years, Charlie devoted his life to these three girls and their children. Charlie always made time for his nine grandchildren. Each of them has many special memories with "C," the name he insisted they call him.

Charlie also had other interests that he shared with his wife, Drema, his children and their children. He was an avid hunter, and loved music, particularly jazz, and Civil War history, and was a fanatic skiier, skiing until he was in his mid- to late-70s. His interests varied widely, as evidenced by his membership in so many clubs and associations. He was a member of the National Restaurant Association; the Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow); the Civil War Roundtable; Charleston Jazz; the Kanawha Valley Historic and Preservation Society; the Fleming Hunt Club; Shriner's; the Cotillion Dance Club; and was a founding member of Snowshoe Mountain Resort.

Charlie, of course, was the Quarrier Diner. Known by his friends as the "Mayor of Quarrier Street," Charlie would greet every customer by name with a huge smile and sincere words that said, "you're special." He always served a varied menu of delicious home cooking at exceedingly affordable prices. Charlie was out to please people, not to make a fortune.

Charlie is preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie; his youngest daughter, Kathryn Ann Young; and his brother, Edward H. Young.

He is survived by his wife, Drema Slack-Young; two of his daughters, Marcia L. (William) Talbott and Harriet L. (Richard C.) Hoy; his stepson, David Slack; his sister, Betty Jo Schumann; sister-in-law, Ariel Young; and nine grandchildren. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins with whom he maintained contact throughout the years.

Thank you to the staff and residents at both Golden Living Center in Glasgow and Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston. They became part of our family.

Memorial service to celebrate Charlie's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston. A reception will immediately follow the service.

Donald ‘Butch’ Webb, age 70, of Crossville, TN, passed away November 18, 2011 at his home. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

He was born March 17, 1941 in Yukon, WV, to Donald and Marie Webb.

Mr. Webb served in the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was an Engineer and Mine Foreman at the U.S. Steel Mines located in Gary and Pineville, WV.
His interests included family, bluegrass music, golfing and motorcycles.

Mr. Webb was survived by his mother, Marie Blankenship Webb of Ashland, KY; and his sister, Brenda Popovich and her husband, Larry of Worthington, KY.

He is also survived by his wife of 39 years, Janet and his 3 children : daughter, Donna Cook and husband, Steve of Sweetwater, TN; daughter, Glenis Brown of Crossville, TN; son, Michael Vickers and wife, Tonya of Pineville, WV.

Additional survivors include; 1 niece, 9 Grandchildren and 6 Great-Grandchildren.

Dr. Nathan William "Bill" Hurtt, formerly of Brighton Township, passed peacefully on September 11, 2011 with his son at his side in Pittsford, NY.

Bill was born March 21, 1929 in Jackson, MI to the late Robert S. and Edna Maple Boys Hurtt.

Preceding him in death was his wife of52 years, Susan L, a son Norman R.; a daughter, Ann Marie; a brother, Roberts S., and a sister Edna L.

Surviving is a son, Dr. William L. (Lynne); three grandsons Justin, Nathan, an Aaron; a sister, Christine Peterson, and a sis-in-law, Dorthy.

Bill had been a resident of Brighton Township for 52 years and resided in Port Charlotte , FL and most recently Pittsford, NY. He was a retired general dentist, having practiced in Beaver for 42 years and maintained a 50 yea membership in the Western Pennsylvania Dental Society. Dr. Hurtt was honored as a lifetime member of the American Dental Association . He was faithful member, Elder and Deacon for Park United Presbyterian Church in Beaver. Bill received his DDS fro the University of Pittsburgh after attending both Bucknell University and Greenbrier Military School. Dr. Hurtt was a World War II veteran having served in the Marine Corps. He was a 50 member of St. James Lodge #457 of the New Castle Consistory and a 50 year member of Syria Shrine Temple. Bill was an avid sportsman enjoying a lifetime of hunting and fishing. He was a member and director of the Sewickley Heights Gun Club and former member of Beaver Valley Country Club. Riverwood Country Club in Port Charlotte , FL., Kiwanis Club and Boy Scouts Canoe Trails.

Charles S. Plumb, II, 83, of Venice, FL, formerly of Columbus, OH, died November5, 2011. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Elaine; son, Charles III of Tulsa, OK.; daughter Amy Sharpe of Columbus, OH.; and three grandchildren, Joseph and Nora Plumb and Claire Sharpe. After Graduating from Greenbrier Military School and Washington & Lee University, he served in the 484th Engineers during the Korean War. Thereafter his career included managing investments and personnel of various institutional investors in Columbus, OH, Toledo, Oh and Washington, DC.

HERSEY, Ross V., 94, of Waynesboro, VA, passed away November 1, 2011 at his residence at Stuarts Draft Retirement Community.

He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on June 27, 1917 and is a graduate of Greenbrier Military School (1936) and Washington & Lee University (1940). After graduating from W&L he came to Waynesboro as Circulation Manager of the News-Virginian. During his brief stay in Waynesboro before World War II, he met and married the former Betty Lou Bush.

During World War II he served in the European Theater of Operations with the Army’s First Infantry Division. He was wounded in North Africa and received the Silver Star for heroism in combat, the Purple Heart, and the French Croix de Guerre with star. He was mustered out as a major.

After the war Mr. Hersey returned to Waynesboro and the News-Virginian and in 1947 was named its Managing Editor. In 1949 he joined the E. I. duPont Company facility in Waynesboro in public relations and personnel work. He retired from duPont in 1974 to pursue a career in public speaking where he made over 1,700 talks in all 50 states to banquets and conventions. He received the Certified Speaking Professional designation from the National Speakers Association.

He was a member of the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club for 46 years, serving as president of his club and as lieutenant governor of the Capital District’s Fifth Division. As a Kiwanian, he chaired the committee that brought Little League baseball to Waynesboro. He served as vice-chairman of both the local Red Cross and the United Way organizations and was president of the Waynesboro Concert Association.

He served as alumni class agent for Washington & Lee for nine years and served two years as president of the Augusta-Rockingham W&L Alumni Chapter. He was a founding member of both the Oak Grove Theater and the Waynesboro Players and performed or directed in over 60 plays. He also served over 20 years on the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace.

Mr. Hersey was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He sang in the choir for many years, and served as president of the church men’s group, as a Sunday School teacher, and a Vestryman. He also served many years as a lay reader, being the first layman in the diocese to administer Holy Communion. He served the Diocese of Southwest Virginia as president of the Laymen of the Diocese and as editor of the Southwestern Episcopalian.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ross V. Hersey, Sr. and Ida C. Hersey and by his daughter-in-law, Patricia E. Hersey. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lou Hersey, by his four children, Robin Hersey of Waynesboro, Barbara Overstreet and her husband Ray of Bedford, Missie Hersey of Richmond, and Andrew Hersey of Charlottesville, and by two grandchildren, Brian and Holland Hersey, both of Waynesboro.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 473 S. Wayne Ave., at 4:00PM on Friday, November 4, 2011. The family will receive guests in the library at St. John’s prior to the service, beginning at 3:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Ross’ name to the Agape fund at St. John’s or to the Stuarts Draft Retirement Community Memorial Fund (144 Patton Farm Rd., Stuarts Draft, VA).

It should be noted, Ross graduated from Greenbrier Military School in 1935 and returned for a post graduate year in 1936 as Cadet Major, the highest rank in the school. He was a life member of the Alumni Association and returned in the 90's and entertained & motivated his fellow classmates and their families at their dinner/dance at The Greebrier. Ross was a member of "the greatest generation".

Arch Francis Knighton ,82, Of Mamick Street, White Sulphur Springs, WV passed away late Saturday night , October 29, 2011 at the White Sulphur Springs Family care Center after an extended illness.

Born on January 12, 1929, he was the son of the late Arch Francis Sr. and Georgia Wylie Knighton.

Mr. Knighton, a member of First Presbyterian Church in White Sulphur springs, graduated from White Sulphur Springs high School where he excelled in basketball and football.He was an avid golfer all his life. He also attended Greenbrier Military School , Marshall University and the University of Georgia. Mr Knighton was a U.S.Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. A certified member of the International Managers Association, Knighton was employed for 18 years at The Greenbrier , Manager of the Pipestem Resort and country clubs in both Virginia and West Virginia.

Preceding him in death other than his parents was his first wife , Ann Cooke Knighton, in 1987 Survivors include his wife at home, Helen Thacker Beall Knighton; Son, Ted Hinerman of Pipestem and daughter, Elizabeth Beall of St. Albans, WV.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at 11AM at Hillcrest Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs

James R. Clowser, 79, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
Born in Hillsboro on May 17, 1932, Jim attended Hillsboro High School, Greenbrier Military School and the University of Maryland. He returned to West Virginia to accept a position with the West Virginia Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He was later appointed head of all vocational rehab centers in the state. He then went to the West Virginia Department of Mental Health where he supervised the agency's Community Program Development division.
In 1970, he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health by Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr., where he administered the state's seven mental health hospitals, 13 community health centers and eight retardation centers.
In 1977, he founded Potomac House, Inc., which grew to five nursing homes and assisted care facilities in West Virginia and Virginia. It was ranked in 1981 in Inc. Magazine's
