Charles Lewis Young

1944

Charles Lewis Young, 85, of Charleston left this world while at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston Sunday, December 11, 2011 surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Charlie was born January 9, 1926 in Charleston and was the eldest son of Otmer M. and Thelma B. Young. As a young man he attended Greenbrier Military School and then graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. After graduation Charlie enlisted in the Navy and served his country in various places, including Australia, during World War II. After the war, Charlie returned home and became an integral part of the family restaurant, the Quarrier Diner, as well as attending Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston.

Charlie married and had three daughters by his first wife, Marjorie Ann (French) Young. His first wife left this world prematurely, but Charlie made an extra special effort to be both father and mother to his three daughters. Whenever possible he would take them skiing, to the family farm in Ripley or on a vacation to a place they had never been. Over the next 50 years, Charlie devoted his life to these three girls and their children. Charlie always made time for his nine grandchildren. Each of them has many special memories with "C," the name he insisted they call him.

Charlie also had other interests that he shared with his wife, Drema, his children and their children. He was an avid hunter, and loved music, particularly jazz, and Civil War history, and was a fanatic skiier, skiing until he was in his mid- to late-70s. His interests varied widely, as evidenced by his membership in so many clubs and associations. He was a member of the National Restaurant Association; the Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow); the Civil War Roundtable; Charleston Jazz; the Kanawha Valley Historic and Preservation Society; the Fleming Hunt Club; Shriner's; the Cotillion Dance Club; and was a founding member of Snowshoe Mountain Resort.

Charlie, of course, was the Quarrier Diner. Known by his friends as the "Mayor of Quarrier Street," Charlie would greet every customer by name with a huge smile and sincere words that said, "you're special." He always served a varied menu of delicious home cooking at exceedingly affordable prices. Charlie was out to please people, not to make a fortune.

Charlie is preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie; his youngest daughter, Kathryn Ann Young; and his brother, Edward H. Young.

He is survived by his wife, Drema Slack-Young; two of his daughters, Marcia L. (William) Talbott and Harriet L. (Richard C.) Hoy; his stepson, David Slack; his sister, Betty Jo Schumann; sister-in-law, Ariel Young; and nine grandchildren. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins with whom he maintained contact throughout the years.

Thank you to the staff and residents at both Golden Living Center in Glasgow and Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston. They became part of our family.

Memorial service to celebrate Charlie's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston. A reception will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie's memory may be made to Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killan Hill Rd. SW, Lilburn, GA 30047; or the Hubbard Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387.

Ernest Linwood Young

1960

Ernest Linwood ‘Lin’ Young, 69, of Gallipolis passed away unexpectedly on November 12th while vacationing. His death brings to a close a life filled with hard work, service, adventure, and love and loyalty to friends.
Lin was born to Linwood and Avanelle (McDaniel) Young in Clarksburg, West Virginia . After attendingGreenbrier Military Academy for several years, he graduated from Philippi High School . Lin attendedAlderson-Broaddus College where he majored in business administration, played basketball, and joined the Delphic Fraternity. Upon graduating from college, he was commissioned in the United States Navy where he, as call-sign ‘Buzzard’, flew A4 Skyhawks and instructed upcoming aviators in advanced jets. Shortly after his commissioning in the Navy, Lin married Gloria Kay Freeland, his faithful companion until her death after a lengthy illness in 1984.
After six years in the Navy, Lin began his life as a family man in 1972 settling down in Gallipolis where he remained for the rest of his life. As a sales representative and subsequent Athens Branch store manager for Walker Machinery, Lin devoted thirty-six years to the lifeblood of Southeastern Ohio : coal, timber, and energy. In the late 1970’s, he was in the coal business as part-owner of CKL Mining. Lin continued to work in the heavy equipment industry after retirement as a part-time field inspector for IronPlanet.
While his career in the military and industry are notable, Lin’s dedication to his family, friends, and church will also be remembered. He married J. Beverly (Johnson) Young in 1985 thus becoming the father of five. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1972 where he served on several committees that governed the affairs of the church. As a former naval aviator, he lent his expertise as a member of the Gallia-Meigs Airport Authority. As a lover of trains, he served as District Superintendent for the National Model Railroaders Association where he earned the Russ Wenderfer Award for outstanding promotion of his hobby. He also opened his home to countless guests to both see and operate the Grafton and Greenbrier, the model railroad in his basement (graftonandgreenbrier.com). In recent years, he further broadened his horizons by joining the board of trustees for the French Art Colony.
Lin was also a member of the Bigelow Masonic Lodge #52 of Phillipi, West Virginia and a member of the Ancient, Accepted Scottish Rites, Valley of Columbus Lodge and Aladdin Shrine.
Any picture of Lin would be incomplete without mentioning those things that are hard to quantify: his willingness to lend a helping hand, his ability to connect with just about anyone, and his loyalty to his family.

Buck was a Fifty-year member of Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree member if the Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids and an active Jester. He was active in Rotary, Chamber of commerce, Manchester Enterprises, Delaware County Cattlemen’s Association, Board of Directors of Iowa’s BlueCross/Blue Shield, Hawkeye Booster Club and a Board of Director of the First State Bank of Manchester. He was active with Delaware County 4-H Clubs and was on the West Delaware County School Board. Buck and Sara retired from Bennett Explosives in 1986. This enabled them to spend time in Arizona as well as Iowa. The Bennett’s developed a passion for tennis. They both play on several leagues year-round. Tennis was the sport in which the entire family lovingly competed with each other. Buck was an avid fisherman and hunter. He made more than fifty trips into the fly-in Lake Wabikimi in Ontario, Canada. His sons, son-in-law and grandsons were all initiated int this tradition which was the rite of passage into manhood.

Somehow Buck Bennett still found time to volunteer three day a week at the Mayo Clinic. His most rewarding volunteer work was serving and aiding ALS patients and friends. Buck Bennett will always be known to his many, many friends and his family as a “straight shooting”, honest man, who most loved God, Sara, his family and his community.
