John Motley Carte

John Motley Carte, passed away at Hubbard House on October 3, 2013, at age 90.
The son of Virgil and Elizabeth Carte, he was born on Fort Hill in Charleston, just a few minutes after the birth of his identical twin, Jack. He would go on to attend Charleston High School and graduate from Greenbrier Military School. A combat veteran, John saw action in France and Germany in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. He would later serve in Korea as well. Discharged in 1949, he continued in the US ArmyReserves until 1961.

Retired from the State Assessor's Office in the 1980's, John married Alice Rogers carte in 1984. Together they enjoyed an active social life going to the races at Keeneland, traveling on the Orient Express and doing a tour of Beijing until Alice's passing in 1998.

John was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Carte Townsend (2011).

John suffered a stroke in 2007 and had been a resident of Heartland Nursing Home since then.

John was quick with a joke and a one-liner and loved telling a good story making him popular party guest, especially in his earlier bachelor days. He loved a new car, a smart-looking dinner jacket, getting a new gift tie, his and Alice's pet miniature schnauzers-especially his favorite, Oliver Cromwell. He and brother, Jack, loved to rib each other and play practical jokes.

He is survived by his brother, Jack Kendall Carte; niece, Connie Hirth, Washington, D.C., and Sharon Carte.

The family expresses its gratitude to those Heartland staff, who were caring of John these past years, and for the comfort provided him at the last by Hubbard House staff.

Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m., Monday, October 7, at Wilson Funeral Home, 420 Lee St. West, Charleston with Rev. Jeff Allen officiating. Entombment with military graveside rites will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
