Col Harley T. "Swampy" Marsh died September 7, 2012 at the age of 95 from complications caused by leukemia. Swampy's military career began at the age of 13 when he was enrolled at Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV. It was at Greenbrier where he first met his future wife, Helen. Upon graduation from Greenbrier, he entered the US Military Academy in 1937. He graduated West Point in June 1941 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Infantry. Swampy spent the next 30 years serving his country with pride and distinction earning numerous awards and recognitions. He married Helen Duncan September 19, 1942. Having spent their marriage at numerous posts and bases, his last duty station was Ft. Sam Houston, where he retired from the military in 1971. They had moved into the Bel Meade subdivision in San Antonio in 1968 and became very active in their community and built a large group of close friends. In November 2000, his wife had a stroke and spent the next 3 years at Parklane West Health Care Center under constant care. Swampy showed his undying devotion to his wife during those 3 years by spending every day but 3 visiting his wife at Parklane prior to her death. He was there so frequently that some staff members thought he worked there. Swampy was part of the "Greatest Generation" who went about their daily tasks quietly, without fanfare, without complaining and expecting no thanks or recognition. In his community of Bel Meade he became the "go to" person when something needed to be done. In recognition of the many of years work and service he did for his community, in May 2000, the City Council of San Antonio passed an ordinance naming a Bel Meade greenspace "Swampy Marsh Park". He viewed this as a highlight of his life. Swampy will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all those that knew him. Swampy was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Cossman Marsh, his father, Harley T. Marsh, Sr., and his wife, Helen Duncan Marsh. He is survived by his son Jeff (Mary) Marsh, daughter Pamela Ann Marsh, grandson James (Kellie) Marsh, granddaughter Kimberly (Richard) Skidmore, and great grandchildren Madelyn Marsh and Coltin Marsh. The family wants to give a special thanks to all the wonderful doctors and nurses who gave him such great care for his prostate cancer and his leukemia. Visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Home, Austin Highway, from 5:00PM to 7PM on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. Funeral Services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at 9:00A.M. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
