Edwin Wayne Moore
OBITUARY
Born in Pittsburgh, PA March 12, 1924, Ed Moore moved with his family to Watsonville in l959 and went to be with the Lord December 7, 2009. He is survived by his wife Virginia, sons Edwin Wayne Moore, Jr., Andrew Andy Moore, David George Moore and his daughter Diane DeDe Moore. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and two cousins, Robert Moore and Charles Magnus.
Ed will always be remembered for his zest for life and his gregarious nature. He made friends wherever he went. For most of his younger life, he was very active, running many marathons and triathlons. He enjoyed handball, playing every Saturday in the late l960’s and 70’s at the local YMCA.
A veteran of WWII, Ed served as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division in the Pacific. He was one of the very first boots to land on the Japanese home islands occupying Atsugi Airbase outside Tokyo two days before General MacArthur landed and over two weeks before the official surrender of the Japanese on the U.S.S. Missouri.
He was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisberg, West Virginia in l942; St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida in l948 and the University of Pittsburgh in l949. He was a past member of the Vestry of All Saints Episcopal Church in Watsonville.
A great lover of animals, Ed served on the Board of the local SPCA and negotiated the closing of the Menker St. pound and subsequent re-locating of the animals to the SPCA shelter prior to the new Watsonville animal shelter. He was a member of the Defenders of Wildlife Legacy Society.
He is predeceased by his father George, mother Marie and brothers George Jr. and John. Ed will be deeply missed as a loving father and grandfather. Remembrances can be made to SPCA, P.O. Box 3800, Santa Cruz, CA 95063 or the Watsonville Animal Shelter on Airport Boulevard.
