Dr. William Russell, 82, died on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.
Dr. Fields was Chief of Radiology Service at the McGuire, Va. Medical Center from 1971 to 1991.
He was the son of John Russell Fields and Elizabeth Prichard Fields, both of Huntington, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Lou Fields Riggs and Nancy Sue Fields Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia McLain Fields; his children, David Russell Fields (Doris) of Worcester, Mass., Jennifer Fields Friend (Robert) of Richmond and Laura Lee Fields of Richmond; and his grandchildren, Christina and Patrick Fields, Nicholas and Anna Friend; and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from Greenbrier Military School in 1951 and attended VPI (Virginia Polytechnic Institute) before serving five years in the U.S. Air Force as a navigator on a tanker plane. He then graduated college from University of Kentucky (1961) and West Virginia University School of Medicine (1965). When he completed his medical residency in radiology at MCV, he became Department Chief of Radiology at McGuire, Va. Medical Center.
Dr. William Fields was a member of Richmond Radiologic Society, American College of Radiology, Society Magnetic Resonance Imaging and National Association of Va. Physicians. Bill loved his time at the river in Deltaville, his boats, Andiamo and Senior Moment and his Harbor House neighbors. He was most proud of his family and service to the Veterans Administration.
There will be a private burial in Huntington, W.Va. His family thanks with grateful hearts the loving and skilled care he received at the end of his life by Hospice of Virginia and his private caregivers.
