MAXWELTON — William Cameron “Wood” McCue died at home in Maxwelton, West Virginia, on April 23, 2012. Wood was born on February 25, 1933, in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Frank Cyrus and Janet Arbuckle McCue and grew up on Hillhurst Farm in Maxwelton, West Virginia, with his parents, two brothers, five aunts and one uncle. Wood married Shirley Rocha in 1957; they recently celebrated 55 happy years together.

Wood attended Greenbrier County public schools and graduated from Greenbrier Military School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Athletic Training from West Virginia University and a degree in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia. Wood earned Master’s degrees in Public Health from the University of Michigan and in City Planning from the University of Cincinnati.

Wood served as Associate Executive Director of the Chattanooga Health and Welfare Planning Council of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and later as Executive Director of the Public Health Federation in Cincinnati. From 1968 to 1978 he was Executive Director of the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of South Florida, formed a management consulting firm in Washington, D.C., and, under contract with the U.S. Public Health Service, wrote “The History of Health Planning in America” and represented the United States at an International World Health Organization conference on health planning in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In 1980, Wood and Shirley came home to Greenbrier County. They settled into the home place in Maxwelton and with Tom Moore formed Moore-McCue and Associates, a private practice offering comprehensive physical therapy services. Wood became an enthusiastic and dedicated community volunteer. For twenty-six years he volunteered as athletic trainer to Greenbrier East High School and Greenbrier Eastern Middle School. The training room at Greenbrier East, which he developed, not bears his name. He was also inducted into the Greenbrier East High School Sports Hall of Fame, Inaugural Class of 2002.

He was an active member of the Lewisburg Rotary Club and the Lewisburg Elks Lodge and Country Club. Wood led the campaign to raise funds to build a new Country Club after the old one was destroyed by fire. He was several times named Elk of the Year. Wood was active in the Presbyterian Church in every city he lived in. He served as a ruling Elder at Clifton Presbyterian Church, Maxwelton.

In recognition of their service to church and community, Wood and Shirley received Shepherd’s Center Greenbrier Valley’s Community Service Award in 2011. Wood was inducted into the West Virginia University’s College of Physical Activity and Sports Science Hall of Fame in 2011. He was named most effective Community Health Planner in America by the American Public Health Associating and the American Health Planning Association.

Wood McCue was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dr. Davis McCue.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, his brother, Dr. Frank C. McCue III and wife Nancy, and his sister-in-law Barbara Lynn McCue. He is survived by his nieces Janet Kimberly McCue, Krista McCue Moshier (Mark), Marylyle McCue Reiter (Jordan) and his nephews Gregory Davis McCue (Whitney) and Frank Joseph McCue. Also surviving are two great-nieces, Emily and Alice Arbuckle Craig, four great-nephews, Scott McCue (Candice), Wesley and Davis Moshier, Nissim Reiter, and one great-great-nephew, Davis William McCue.

A service of Thanksgiving for the life of Wood McCue will be held on May 5, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Clifton Presbyterian Church, Maxwelton, West Virginia, with Rev. Janice Johnson officiating, with a Celebration of his life at the Lewisburg Elks Country Club immediately following the service.

Wood (Bill) was a 1953 Junior College graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg.
