Robert H. Fortune

Robert H. Fortune, 74 of Saybrook Township took his last cruise on January 20th onboard the Carnival “Splendor”. He was born September 6, 1941 in Conneaut the son of Robert M. and Helen (Hewitt) Fortune and has been a lifetime area resident.

He graduated in 1959 from Greenbrier Military Academy in West Virginia and received his Bachelor’s degree from Kent State University. He owned Frank Fortune Wholesale Grocery Company; he was also sales manager of the Cleveland division of Super foods. Currently he was the lot boy at West Side Auto in Saybrook.

He was a Saybrook little league coach when his sons were young; a lifetime member of BPOE #208; a past president of the Ashtabula Jaycees; a member of Music Box Society International; a member of the Ashtabula Rod & Gun Club; he was a Notary Public; a substitute teacher; a member of the Saybrook Twp. fire department where he was a firefighter/EMT; he was Vice Commander of the Saybrook Water Rescue team; he was a Master Diver; a coxswain of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and had his Captains license for the Great Lakes.

Surviving him are his two sons, Rob (Marcia) Fortune of Ashtabula and Rick (Gina) Fortune of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Haley Pritt, Eric B. Fortune, Jr and Joseph Leshnack; several Great grandchildren; four brothers, Ronald L. (Linda) of Ashtabula, William F. (Diana) of New Mexico, Michael E. (Mary) of South Carolina and David S (Julie) of Alabama; several nieces and nephews and his extended family at Martinis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon in 2004 and by a granddaughter, Danielle Marie.

Funeral services will be Monday (Feb. 1st) at 11:00 AM at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 615 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Michael Meranda officiating. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday (Jan. 31st) from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula. Richard Warren Wilkinson

Richard W. Wilkinson ‘48/49, (11/18/1932 - 1/15/2016)

R. W. “Buzzy” Wilkinson passed away Friday, Jan 15, 2016 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, SC at the age of 83, following a short illness. He was born Nov 18, 1932 in Welch, and was the son of the late E M Wilkinson, MD and Addie Mae (Johnson) Wilkinson of Pineville, WV.

He is survived by Patricia Ann Haynes Wilkinson; two sons, Richard Ernest “Rick” Wilkinson and Frank Warren Wilkinson and his wife Gina Butcher Wilkinson, of Bluefield, VA; and three grandchildren, Anne Warren Wilkinson, Caroline Pearson Hayes Wilkinson and Frank Thomas Wilkinson of Bluefield, Va. He is also survived by his brother, E.M. Wilkinson, Jr. of Covington, VA.

He graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg in 1950 and was a college freshman in 1951, and then attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1955. He was an exceptional athlete and became the first basketball player to have his jersey---number 14---retired at the University of Virginia. He was also recognized as an All American in 1954 and 1955 and still holds the single season ACC scoring record for averaging 32.1 point per game in 1955. He scored 2233 points during his college career and is currently third on the University’s all-time scoring list. He also averaged 28.6 points per game for a career and score 898 points his senior year, which is a record as well. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics in that same year.

He was honored on July 25, 2015 at the Sports Legends Reunion at the Beckley Moose Club. They referred to him as the “Jerry West of the University”. He decided to give up a career with the Celtics following a car accident and attended law school at the University of Virginia, graduating in1962. He moved to Bluefield, W. Va. and worked at the First National Bank of Bluefield (now First Century Bank) and had a rewarding baking career that lasted for 50 years. He retired as president and CEO on Dec. 31, 2010. He was still active on the boards of the bank and holding company at the time of his death. His passion was working with people and making the community a better place to live for everyone.
Buzzy also served as president of the H.I. Shott, Jr. Foundation, as well as the Ethel N. Bowen Foundation. He was active in many civic organizations and believed in giving of his time for the betterment of the community.

In accordance with his wishes, the family will have a private service. The family would as that, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Christ Episcopal Church, 200 Duhring Street, Bluefield, WV 24701, for their Food Pantry Program.

W. Sherman Beard

W. Sherman Beard of Hillsboro, WV died January 6, 2016 at Pocahontas Center in Marlinton, WV.

He was born October 29, 1922 at Hillsboro, WV, the son of Henry W. and Lucy McLaughlin Beard.

Sherman was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV and West Virginia University with a degree in agriculture in 1948. Sherman was a lifelong farmer, a member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church , where he was an elder emeritus, deacon and church treasurer for over 30 years; past director of the Bank of Marlinton and served as president for several years ; past member of the Board of Visitors for WVU; m;ember of the Pocahontas Farm Bureau ; member of the WV Cattleman's Association; and was an Army Air Corps B-24 pilot , who flew 35 missions over Europe during WWII.

In addition to his parents; his wife of 66 years , Mary Alice Young Beard ; and grandchildren , Sarah Blough, David Blough and Mark Blough preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn A. Ryniak and husband Dennis, and E. Lynn Sigmon and Husband Marvin; son, William S. Beard and wife, Barbara , brother Robert L. Beard ad wife, Lois, of St. Mary's; and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Oak Grove Church on Sunday January 10, 2015 and burial at the Oak Grove Cemetery will follow the funeral service.

Larry DeVincentis

Larry DeVincentis, 79, 0f Monaca, wonderful husband, best father, grandfather and true friend to so many, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, while under the compassionate care of the staff of Heritage Valley Beaver’s Intensive Care Unit.

Larry was born on August 1, 1936, in Monaca, a son of the late Flavio and Modesta (Cenci) DeVincentis. He was a graduate of Monaca High School, Class of 1955, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He attended Greenbrier Military School in White Sulfur Springs, WV, before attending college with a full scholarship playing football for the Cincinnati Bearcats in Cincinnati, OH; where he was ranked fourth best punter in the nation.

On March 6, 1959, Larry married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Davis.

Larry worked at Colonial Steel for 10 years and Nova Chemical for 25 years. After his retirement, Larry continued to stay active by working for the Beaver County Courthouse. He coached Monaca Jr. High football and Monaca Midget Football for a combined 25 years, where he left his players with a wealth of knowledge, not only about football, but more importantly life itself. Larry was inducted into the Monaca Hall of Fame and was chosen as Monaca’s Finest Football Player. He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Monaca, Monaca Sportsman’s Club, Monaca Turners, Monaca Sokol Club and Monaca PNA.

Throughout his life, Larry enjoyed many sports and activities, which included playing softball, bowling and golfing, as well as playing Scrabble and doing crossword puzzles. His favorite activity was following all his grandchildren to any sporting event in which they participated. During his retirement years Larry enjoyed planting and tending to his garden, going to camp in Tionesta and enjoying many family Sunday dinners filled with stories of the past that always ended in much laughter. Larry truly loved sports, but the most important people in his life were his family.

In addition to his parents Larry was preceded in death by a sister, Aquilina Harris and a brother, Anthony DeVincentis.

Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Ann (Davis) DeVincentis; a daughter, Tracy (Richard) Schultz of Monaca; a son, Larry (Katrina) DeVincentis of Center Township; seven grandchildren, Lindsay (Sam) Cercone, Ricky Schultz, Skyler Schultz, Brandon Schultz, Theresa DeVincentis and Cameron DeVincentis; four great-grandchildren, Italia, Sammy and Chase Cercone and Kendall Schultz; a brother-in-law, Dale Harris and a sister-in-law, Hilda Weaver, as well as many special nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, where parting prayers will be offered Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Monaca.

Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

John Gary Watson

JOHN GARY WATSON, 81 years old, of Louisville, Kentucky, died December 29, 2015 in Louisville surrounded by his family. He was born on May 9, 1934 in Huntington, West Virginia, to the late Ruth Elizabeth and John Thomas Watson.

Gary attended Huntington High School in Huntington, West Virginia, where he excelled in Track and was an All-State football player. He attended Greenbrier Military School and the University of Virginia on football scholarships.

Gary served his country in Heidelberg, Germany, at the 130th Station Hospital, the hospital where General George Patton died. Gary returned to Huntington and continued his studies and was a graduate of Marshall University.

Gary moved to Louisville and began a 37 year career in the cement industry, retiring in 1998 as Regional Vice President with Louisville Cement Company and Essroc Materials. He was a recipient of industry awards including the Carl Franks Leadership Award from the Indiana Concrete Council, the Howard Roberts Award and the Legends Award from the Kentucky Ready Mix Concrete Association. He also served on numerous boards and committees in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and was privileged to serve the Lord as an Elder, Deacon and Clerk of Session. He was an avid golfer and a 40 year member of Midland Trail Golf Club.

Gary was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Ann Watson; children, John Taylor, Gary Michael (Colleen), Ann, Billy (Terri), Kimberly (Hollis), Sandi (Chris), Terri (Alex) and James (Liz); nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and his boxer, Benjamin.

Visitation will be on Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral ceremony at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 10200 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, Kentucky. Paul Mitchell 'Mitch' Scott passed away Tuesday, 29, 2015. He was born 11/1/1928.
Preceded in death by his Wife Liz.

Mitch graduated from Greenbrier high School in Ronceverte, attended college first at Greenbrier Military School, transferred to, and graduated from Virginia Polytechnical Institute.

He returned to Greenbrier County and lewisburg where he was a John Deere Salesman and a New York Life agent. He and his wife, Liz, were very active in the community and they were recognized for their contributions to the area.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church , Saturday Jan. 23, 2016 at 11 am.

George William McCall, Jr.

George William “Billy” McCall, Jr., age 88, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia died on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 in Bristol, Tennessee.

Mr. McCall was born in Huntington, WV on August 19, 1927 to the late George William McCall, Sr. and Lula Catherine Cunningham McCall. Bill had attended Richlands High School and was a graduate of the Greenbrier Military School. He served his country in the US Navy and went on to attend the University of Richmond, graduating in 1950. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Order (Eta Chapter). On March 19, 1955, he married the love of his life and the mother of his children, the late Vivian Sewell McCall. Bill was a coal operator, a real estate developer, stockbroker and was very active in the community as an organizer for Clinch Valley Bank and Trust, and an organizer for First Sentinel Bank. Bill was a charter member of the Tazewell County Country Club and, at the time of his death, was the longest active member of the club. Bill helped organize the Richlands Midget League Football Program with the guidance of the late Coach Ernie Hicks. He was a member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church and a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF & AM for 65 years. He had lived all of his life in the Richlands and Cedar Bluff areas and was a diehard Richlands Big Blue Tornado fan.

Jerry Lee Cowley, 78, of Charleston, passed away on Monday, Dec 21, 2015 at home.
Jerry was born Sept 25, 1937 to the late Fenton and Verna Cowley.

He was a lifelong resident of Charleston and was retired from Pauley Motor Car.

Jerry was a 1956 graduate of Charleston High School, went to Greenbrier Military School as a post graduate and was a U S Army veteran.

He was a member of Meadowbrook Country club and Kanawha County Club.
Jerry enjoyed spending time with his friends, hunting, fishing and golfing

William MacDonald Clark

William Macdonald Clark, age 76 passed away Dec 11, 2015. Born in 1939 in Logan County, WV, 2nd child of Vurginia Dare Ohipps. Graduate of Greenbrier Military School , University of Virginia with a BA degree in Economics in 1961 and earned a JD from the University of Miami in 1968. Married Juliet Elaine Hamilton in Mobile, AL in 1962. Began as VP and General Merchandising Manager for Burdines of Mioami and Rike’s of Dayton, Oh (divisions of Federated stores) for 10 years. In 1972 joined Robinson’s of St. Petersburg, FL as CEO and then was named Chairman of Stix, Baer & Fuller of St Louis MO (divisions of Associated Dry Goods). After surviving a melanoma at age 36, he moved back to South Florida in 1978 and co-founded the law firm, Thompson and Clark, to be near family. He was recruited away after five years to Alamo Rent A Car where he quickly rose to Vice Chairman, President and Chief Marketing Officeer and forever changed the industry with his proclamation that “all the miles are free”. He was active on many corporate boards including the Lauderdale Marina, The 15th Street Fisheries and the McDonald Land Companies and was a mentor to countless young executives across the country.

He was a Ft Lauderdale resident for over 60 years , a part time resident on Scotland Cay, Abaco Bahamas and was a summer resident on Grindstone Island in the Thousands Islands, New York for his entire life. He is survived by his wife of 54 years and love of his life, Juliet Hamilton Clark and children Juliet Clark Bluestein of Alexandria, Virginia (Michael), William Macdonald Clark, Jr. (Jenifer) and Jennifer Clark Uustal (John) all of Ft. Lauderdale, brothers in law Ted Drum (Kathy) and Dick Clark (Jane), four nephews (Steven Clark, Scott Clark, Kelly Drum, Douglas Clark) two nieces (Lorrie Roschman, Allison Dumke) and six grandchildren: Harrison Clark Bluestein, Macy Macdonald Uustal, Willow Phipps Bluestein, Marian Hamilton Uustal, John Marcone Uustal, Willow Macy Clark and her brother Joseph Edward Conner. He was predeceased by his mother Virginia Phipps Cox, his father former Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Robert Osborne Cox, his brother John Stevens Clark (Barbara) and his sister Carol Clark Drum. Macdonald’s generosity, compassion, irreverence, wit, humor and drive made him a giant of a man to all who knew him. He lives on in all of us. A memorial service will be held this winter bringing together friends and family.

Gordon “Square Deal” Mullins ’59, age 74, of Richlands, VA passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Richlands and was the son of the late Doug and Dismal Fields Mullins of Tazewell County, and was raised by his late grandparents , Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fields Sr.

“Square Deal” was a class of 1958 graduate of Greenbrier Military School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 -1961. He was injured at the Berlin Wall and was discharged early from service. He was retired a contractor and part time comedian. He attended Gethsemane Baptist Church and was a lifelong resident of the area. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ginger Lowry Mullins; daughter, Sherry Kahib of Tazewell; grandchildren, J.D. Mullins, Jimmy Kahib, Jasmine Kahib; stepmother, Edith Mullins of Ft. Pierce, Fl; a host of friends.

Webster Clay Nohe Jr.

Webster Clay Nohe, Jr. of Vienna, WV, left this world peacefully in his sleep September 25, 2015, to be with the Lord.
He was born on November 1, 1925 in Parkersburg, WV the son of the late Clay and Mary Pickering Nohe.
Web was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV. Active in both World War II and the Korean War, he joined the U.S. Navy in Oct. 1943 and advanced to Signalman third class in Aug. 1944. He was stationed in Oran, Algeria and Palermo, Sicily. He was honorably discharged in 1946, graduated from Marietta College, and returned to the Navy in 1949. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and was once again honorably discharged in 1952. He returned home just months before the birth of his son to work in real estate and property management until his retirement. In his younger years, Web was always very active and enjoyed handball, weight lifting and running. Those who knew him know of his long love affair with his wife’s poached eggs , large bags of M&M’s and Tootsie Pops. He enjoyed his twilight years watching the cardinals, hummingbirds and squirrels outside his bedroom patio. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.
He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 65 years (November), Dottie A. Nohe of Vienna. They were married in Carmel, CA while he was serving in the Navy. He is also survived by his children, former WV State Senator David C. Nohe (Pam) of Vienna and June Nohe-Fairchild of Vienna. He was always “Dee” to his grandchildren, Jennifer Holzapfel (Jeff), Diana Wilson (Josh), Trey Fairchild (Heather), and Adam Nohe (Jessica; and six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Audrey, Julia, Easton and Kate.
A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Mt Olivet Cemetery I Parkersburg, where he will be buried next to his parents, with Rev. Fr. John Gallagher officiating and military rites by Parkersburg American Legion Post # 105.

Christopher Rush Walkup

Christopher Rusk Walkup, 82, of White Sulphur Springs, WV, died peacefully at home on Saturday morning, September 5, 2015, after battling COPD.
Born March 25, 1933, at Renick, WV, he was a son of the late Harry Lepps and Ollie Mae Driver Walkup.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in White Sulphur Springs and was a Korean conflict veteran. He was a 1952 graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV, and attended WVU, joining Kappa Sig fraternity until he joined the army.
After returning from service, he gained employment with Capital Finance in Lewisburg, then First National Bank in Ronceverte, WV, and the Bank of White Sulphur Springs. He was President of the Bank of White Sulphur Springs for many years and president emeritus of First Citizens Bank of White Sulphur until retirement. Chris was past president of West Virginia Bankers Association in 1979 and 1980 and was past president of the White Sulphur Springs Industrial Development Incorporation. He was a member of the Hillsboro Mason Lodge in 1956, then was a member of the Allegheny Lodge at White Sulphur Springs, Chris was a member of the Elks Club , holding almost every local position and was past president of the Rotary International of White Sulphur Springs and served two terms ass president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was past chairman of the Greenbrier County Democratic Committee and was remembered for his undying support of WVU Athletics, especially football. Chris was an avid golfer and could always be found on the golf course with his buddies.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother , Ethel “Blondie” Walkup ; his paternal grandfather, Robert “Bob” James Walkup in 1947 ; paternal grandmother , Sadie McClung Walkup in 1958; and a half brother, Darrell Blake. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Frankie H. Walkup at home’ daughters, Sadie Ann Prichard (Allen) of Richmond, VA, and Victoria Rusk Walkup-Pierce (Eric) of Orlando, and Christopher Allen Prichard and Scott Franklin Prichard, both of Richmond, and Christopher Rusk Pierce of Orlando.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 PM on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Morningside Cemetery at Renick, WV, for family and close friends.
Visitation will be form 6-8 PM on Wednesday, September 9, at the Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs.
In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Note: Chris attended GMS for four (4) years and graduated as a 1st Lt., played JV football, served as editor-in chief of the student newspaper, member of the yearbook staff, Quill & Scroll, Hi-Y, Honor Court and Boot and Spur.

Mrs Jeanette Hughes Brightbill has called to inform the Association of Jim's passing on August 23, 2015. Jim had not been well for the two years prior to his death, being confined to a medical facility of one kind or another.

Details of his life, including a 26 year work history in the food service of WestPoint, return to Lewisburg then a later move to New York are included in his obituary which are to follow.

WARNER ROBINS, GA - Lt Col Eduard Garrett "Garry" Grimes, USAF, 58, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2015. Garry was born in Virginia and was currently residing in Warner Robins, GA. He was an Intelligence Officer in the USAF Reserves and US Civil Service. Survivors include his wife, Beverly A. Grimes of Warner Robins, GA; his mother, Margitta R. Grimes of Hampton, VA; one brother, Mario W. Grimes and his wife, Ruth, of Hampton, VA; one nephew William J. Grimes of Newport News, VA; and his very much loved dogs Murdoch, Nikko, Reba and Putt-Putt. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at base chapel on Langley Air Force Base. PENNELL WILLIAM G., Jr., age 84, of Zelienople, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Born November 21, 1930, in Bellevue, he was the son of the late William G. and Margaret A. (Welsh) Pennell, Sr. Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years, LaVerne (Dollhopf) Pennell of Zelienople; his children, Susan (Tom) Hayson of Franklin Park and William (Lorraine) B. Pennell of Sunrise, FL; his sister, Sarah (Ronald) Westerman of Pittsburgh; his five grandchildren, Carl, Elizabeth, Nicole, Kevin and Jessica; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Jaworek. Bill was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He retired from PPG Industries in 1992. Above all, he cherished the importance of his family. Gordon Churchill Willis

Gordon C. Willis, Jr. (Bo), age 65 of Penhook died suddenly on Friday, May 15, 2015. He leaves his wife Cynthia Simms Willis and two children Peige Willis Rose (Harry) and Gordon C. Willis III (Sabrene`). He also leaves two stepsons, Patrick Gardner, Anthony Gardner (Tracey) and eight precious grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon C. Willis, Sr. and wife Jean, Julia Garrett and step-father, Olin Garrett.

Born in Roanoke, Virginia on September 1, 1949, Bo worked alongside his father and son at their family owned business, Rockydale Quarries and Old Heritage Corp. in Roanoke and retired after 37 years where he was President and CEO of the Companys.

In the years that followed, Bo enjoyed many passions…. his love for the outdoors and nature, hunting, farming, his canine companion, Carmen and the love of his life and best friend, Cynthia. Whenever you saw one you saw both, they truly loved every minute they shared together.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Flora Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends and family will gather afterwards at Water’s Edge Country Club. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount. William Nave Turner

William Nave Turner died on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, W.Va. A gentleman, he was surrounded by his family who gave him joy and happiness each day of his life.

Bill was born in Clarksburg, W.Va., on March 3, 1927. He was graduated from Greenbrier Military School in 1945, having polished a cannon to the point of ownership, and attended West Virginia University where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Putman of Beckley, on September 29, 1950.

Bill served in the United States Army stationed in Germany. Honorably discharged, he returned home to Beckley where he and Mary Ann made their home and had three children.

A long, successful career in the mining industry began with the Raleigh Wyoming Mining Company, working with his father in law Mr. L T Putman, the company president. The company’s closure led him to a career with Cooke Wilson Electric Supply Company and Cam-Ral Chain Company with his friend and partner Larry Ciccarelli.

Throughout his life in Beckley he was a member of The First Christian Church where he served as a Deacon, board member, and Cub Scout Pack Master. Bill joined The Rotary Club of Beckley in 1956 and served as the President from 1979-1980. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1989 for service to the Rotary Club. He was appointed to the Armory Board (later the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center) in 1966 serving 41 years until 2007, many years as President of the Armory Board. He believed that it promoted growth to southern West Virginia and was proud to be associated with its operation and with the staff that served it and Raleigh County. Bill was a member of Black Knight County Club until his death and served as President in 1971.

Bill is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Mary Ann and three children all of whom still live and work in Beckley. His family includes his daughter Carol Ann Cooper and her husband Conrad; their children Conrad Cooper and his wife Tiffany and their two children Riley Anne and Addison Carol of Tampa, Fla. and Christopher Cooper of Tampa, Fla.; his son William Lorin Turner and his wife Cindy and their two children Dr. Jennifer Turner of Morgantown, W.Va. and William Lorin II of Beckley; and his son Charles Garland Turner and his wife Carolyn and their children Charles Daniel of Beckley and Brooke Elise and fiance’ Lanny Meadows of Morgantown.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at the First Christian Church on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 2 in the afternoon. Friends are invited to call prior to the service at 12 noon.

Donations of celebration honoring Bill’s life and supporting the community, may be made to First Christian Church or Beckley Area Foundation.

John N Monarek

John “Jack” N. Monarek, 74, of Allentown passed away Monday,
May 11, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown. Born
November 6, 1940 in Phoenixville, PA, but resided in Mont Clare,
PA until the 1960's, he was the son of the late Mary (Vasko) and
John J. Monarek. He was married to Barbara (Lackatos) Monarek
with whom he would have celebrated 30 years of marriage this
coming August.

Jack worked as a sales rep for Boston Scientific retiring in
2010. He also worked for 3M medical supply for many years and
several other medical supply companies.

Jack was a 1958 graduate of Phoenixville Area High School where
he was a 4 letter varsity athlete and was just recently inducted
to the Phoenixville Hall of Fame. After graduating he went to
Greenbrier Military School on a Football Scholarship. Jack then
went to Wake Forest University on a full football scholarship but
also competed for the Wake Forest Track Team where he held the
school record for forty years in the longest javelin throw. Jack
served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
While at McGuire Air Force Base he played baseball for four years
and was given the opportunity to play minor league baseball but
chose a college education instead.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in
Bethlehem where he volunteered his time and served as the church
treasurer.

Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara, children,
John and wife Cori, Larisa, David, Kyra and Gregory, five
grandchildren, Alex, Olivia, Sophia, Jack and Lily. He is also
survived by numerous family members.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at St. Nicholas
Russian Orthodox Church 980 Bridle Path Rd., Bethlehem, PA 18017
from 9-11 AM followed by a service at 11 AM. Burial will be at
Holy Ghost Eastern Rite Church Cemetery in Phoenixville.

Bobby Edward Adkins

B. E. “Bob” Adkins 85, a lifelong resident of Huntington, WV passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015. A celebration of Life will be held on Friday at 2:00p.m. at Beard Mortuary with Re, Bill DeMoss officiating. Interment will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from noon until service time. He was born May 14, 1929 in Huntington, WV the son of the late Norman and Beulah Hayes Adkins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years , Lorna Pearson Adkins and a sister Norma Rowsey.

He graduated from Huntington East High School in 1947, where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track all with his precious sister Norma Belle by his side. He then attended Greenbrier Military School on a football scholarship. His love of sports continued as he became active in the church softball league, serving as President for many years.

He was a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church. He was devoted to his wife and daughters. He sacrificed promotions in his career to keep him and his family close to home. Eventually, he became successful owning his own business in the electrical field. Through many decades he loved going to the YMCA. Eventually he went on to represent West Virginia in the Senior Olympics multiple times in the 3 on 3 basketball competion. He and his “old crony buddies” even had their own following of supporters. Some of Bob’s best memories were with his life-long friend, Larry Duncan. And their world travels. They were blessed to have traveled several times to Europe, and also to Australia and China. They were truly two peas-in-pod. Bob Loved Marshall University and took pride in supporting “The Herd” by purchasing basketball and football season tickets beginning in 1972 . He always felt that it didn’t matter if the team won or lost, you still needed to support them.
Bob was the most unselfish man you would ever meet. He always had a smile and a joke. He lived by these words “only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”

He is survived by his loving family, his two daughters and son-in law, Karen and Mike Booten of Murfreesboro, TN and Connie John Priddy of Barboursville, WV; four grandsons who he always had words of wisdom for and they loved him dearly, Brandon (April) Booten, Adam(Lane) Booten, Ales (Rachel) Booten and Garnett Priddy; three great grandchildren, Ben, Wells and Willa Kate Booten; Brother-in-law, Johnny Henderson of Cocoa, Fl; two nieces, four nephews and a host of extended family and friends.

Bruce Richard McGinnis

LEWISBURG — Bruce Richard McGinnis, 69, of Lewisburg, died Wednesday, April 1, 2015.
Bruce was born in Montgomery, W.Va., and was the only child of the late Lester and Juanita McGinnis.

After graduating from Greenbrier Military School, Bruce graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in finance and a masters in business.

Bruce married the former Paula Owens of Frankford, W.Va. They had two children, Greg McGinnis of Austin, Texas and Brian McGinnis of Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Bruce was a lifelong business man. Most recently and rewardingly, he was the Chief Operations Officer for the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. A position he held until his passing.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Paula, his son, Greg, his son, Brian, and his daughter-in-law, Tammy.

Bruce touched many lives in his 69 years, and he will be missed by many. He was a loving and caring husband, father, and friend. He was quick to help those in need, and always put other peoples' needs before his own.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Bruce's life for family, friends, and co-workers in the near future.

Thomas Jefferson Bowman

Thomas Jefferson “Jeff” Bowman, III, well known Pendleton resident, ended life peacefully on March 28, 2015, in Franklin. Born August 1, 1924 on West Market St., Harrisonburg, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas J. “Tom” Bowman, II and Alice Rebecca Woodson Bowman. In 2010 he was predeceased by his sister, Alice Woodson Bowman Altizer Call. Influential in life was his uncle, the late Ernest Bowman of Franklin, with whom he partnered in business for many years.

On December 31, 1945, at Washington Street Methodist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, Mr. Bowman married Dorothy Lee Lambert Bowman who survives. He is also survived by his son, Thomas J. Bowman, IV, and his daughter and son-in-law Rebecca Lynn Bowman and Richard W. Lough, all of Franklin. He was “Grand-Daddy Jeff” to devoted grandchildren, Matthew Bowman Lough, of Newport Beach, CA., and Adam Richard Lough of Franklin. Gatherings with his great-grandchildren, Maddison Hannah, Gracie Ella and Britton Masters Lough were joyous events. A number of nieces and nephews and several cousins also survive, including Mary Shay Reynolds Corneby, formerly of Franklin. Mr. Bowman was predeceased by a number of valued friends; among them were John Hott, Sumner Jones, John Miller, Bill Harr, Harry Byers, Morris Homan, John Harman, Philip Altizer, Bill Evick, Ben Aulde, Richard Boggs, L.T. Stickley, William McCoy, Jr. and Charles Sites.

Graduating from Franklin High School in 1942, he attended Greenbrier Military Academy until joining the United States Marine Corps. During World War II he served in the South Pacific aboard the heavy cruiser USS Alaska. He remained a proud Marine all the days of his life.

Descended from early Pendleton settlers, the Masters and Dices, Mr. Bowman was widely known as owner of Ernest Bowman & Brother, Inc., a hardware business founded in 1872 by his grandfather, Thomas J. Bowman, I. His greatest enjoyment derived from back-grounding beef cattle and his farming practices on Dickenson Mt. Farm garnered a number of awards, including Potomac Valley Conservation District’s Farmer of the Year in 2006. Partnership with Ernest Coatney (“Cody”) Evick offered his happiest and most productive years in the cattle growing industry. He served on the Board of Directors for The Pendleton Community Bank for 45 years, where his knowledge of the local real estate market was as asset. An active community leader, he was a town councilman and, for many years, president of Franklin Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Bowman was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Pendleton County Veterans of Foreign Wars. Joining other Pendleton businessmen in the late 1960s, Mr. Bowman was active in forming Pendleton Industries (now EDA), a group dedicated to improving local economic development. A lifelong member of Franklin United Methodist Church, Mr. Bowman faithfully served in numerous administrative capacities, and was noted for his steadfast devotion to the Methodist tradition. An avid sportsman, Mr. Bowman enjoyed hunting, fishing, and horseback riding, and held a lifelong interest in forestry. Family and friends will recall his pleasure at their company during summer evenings on his Main Street porch.

Franklin United Methodist will be open all day, April 2, 2015, for those who wish to visit in private remembrance with cremains and sign the guest book. Friends are invited to join the family at Franklin United Methodist Church sanctuary for a time of casual visiting and sharing from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. the same day. A celebration of life and music will begin at 3:00; interment of ashes will be private at a later date. Immediately following the service all are invited to the family home, 408 North Main St. Franklin, for light refreshments and remembering this good man and celebrating a life well-lived.

Edward Blaine Phillips

Edward Blaine Phillips '46, of Lewisburg, passed away Monday, March 23, 2015 at his home. Born October 26, 1927, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Edward Thomas Philips and Thelma J. Williams Phillips.

Ed graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg and was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War. He graduated from WVU with an engineering degree and worked briefly for DuPont in Charleston, WV, before returning to Lewisburg to work with Capital Finance. Then in 1963, he became owner of the Greenbrier Insurance Agency and in 1971, he bought Stuart and Watts Real Estate. He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge and served on the original Greenbrier County Planning Commission.

He was married to Marion Collins and is survived by their two children, Edward Blaine Phillips II and wife Barbara, of Lewisburg and Marilyn Fraser and husband , Simon, of Hilton Head , SC; four grandchildren , Erica Brown of Lewisburg, Andrew Fraser of Nashville, TN, Alex Fraser of Washington, DC and Ben Fraser of Savannah, GA; and one great grandson, Landon Brown. He was later married to Andrea McClung McCall.
