'Doc' McCue dies at 82

Dr. Frank McCue, who led the sports medicine program at the University of Virginia for decades, passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.

One of the most beloved individuals in University of Virginia history, Dr. Frank C. McCue III, passed away Sunday at the age of 82.

Known simply to most as “Doc,” McCue directed the UVa sports medicine program for more than 40 years. He was a pioneer in orthopedic surgery and once considered the leading hand surgeon in the nation, often attracting some of the biggest names in professional sports to his care.

Not only did McCue, the Cavaliers’ team physician, and his longtime sidekick Joe Gieck, take care of UVa athletes but also donated their time to treat athletes from other universities around the state as well as injured high school athletes.

“No one loved the University of Virginia more, nor has anyone done more to contribute to the welfare of citizens across the Commonwealth than Frank McCue,” said Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage. “When I think about people that truly made a difference in the welfare of others, Dr. McCue will be at the top of my list. It is hard to estimate the number of patients he served, the number of aspiring doctors and trainers he mentored or the number of hours he volunteered during his career.”

McCue served as surgeon for not only UVa but the University of Richmond, William & Mary and VMI athletics programs prior to those institutions having their own doctors.

In 1998, the McCue Society was created in his honor and annually provided numerous scholarships in the field of Sports Medicine to both graduates and undergraduates at the June dinner.

It was at the dinner three years ago when former UVa basketball player and head coach Jeff Jones gave an inside perspective on what Dr. McCue meant to student-athletes and coaches alike. Jones was fired as the Cavaliers’ coach in 1998 and referenced that period of his life in a personal story about McCue.

“April 6, 1998, wasn’t the best day or month for me,” Jones told those attending the McCue Society dinner. “It was a tough time, but often in difficult times, things are revealed that make a meaningful impact that sticks with you a long time. I received a letter from Dr. McCue, that I still have.”

Noting that, Jones pulled the letter from his pocket and read it aloud to the crowd.

“Many people have come and gone in the athletic department and the athletes are part of my family,” McCue wrote Jones. “I really think of you as another son. If I can ever do anything for you and yours, just let me know.”

Jones said he has kept the letter over the years because McCue was always special to him and always will be.

“Thousands of lives have been touched in a positive way by Dr. Frank McCue,” Jones said.

McCue was a native of Maxwelton, W.Va., and attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, before receiving his bachelor’s and medical degrees from UVa in 1952 and 1956. He completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at UVa and a two-year fellowship in surgery of the hand with Drs. Joseph Boyes, James Wilson and Herbert Stark in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California.

He returned to UVa in 1961 and joined the School of Medicine faculty as an instructor in orthopedic surgery. He was named a full professor of orthopedic surgery in 1974.

McCue retired in 2003 and was named Professor Emeritus of Orthopedics at UVa hospital and because of his love and dedication to Cavalier football, he became the first inductee to the Order of the Crossed Sabres, which is the Virginia Football Alumni Club’s most prestigious honor.

The Virginia High School Coaches Association, in appreciation of the work that McCue volunteered for decades, annually presents a sports medicine award in his name.

McCue loved his “fellows,” that would join colleagues, athletic trainers, students, coaches and friends each summer for the McCue Society conference where the good doctor would always hold court.

Even this past June, with health conditions presenting him discomfort, McCue managed to attend the dinner and shared his thoughts with those in attendance.

The McCue Center, which is UVa’s primary athletics support building and also houses sports medicine and the Cavaliers’ football program, is named in his honor.

“Frank McCue represented the values that make the University of Virginia great,” said UVa president Teresa A. Sullivan. “He was selfless, dedicated, professional and always ready to serve the University he so loved. His presence will be greatly missed and his contributions simply cannot be overstated.”

Littlepage perhaps said it best with his final thought on McCue.

“He’ll be missed and there will never be another like him,” Littlepage said.

Daniel Ray Martin, 72, of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at his home. He was a life long resident of Giles County. He was an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows, where he faithfully reached out to the youth of Giles County and was always ready to provide transportation to anyone willing to ride in the back of his truck. He was an avid coach of little league sports in Narrows, where he never picked favorites and made sure everyone had a good time. Dan's home was always open to anyone, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Daniel was born in Narrows on October 23, 1939, and was the son of the late James Bo and Myrtle Shrader Martin.
He is survived by one son, Gabriel Martin and wife Jennifer of Pembroke; and one daughter Temple Martin of Narrows; one sister, Anna Sue Presley of Hazel Park, Michigan; four brothers, Thomas Martin and wife Judy of Haymarket, Va., Bill Martin and wife Judy of Staunton, Va., Jimmy Martin of Salem, and Clifford (Kip) Martin and wife Janet of Broad Run, Va., several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); 605 Memorial Boulevard in Narrows, with Ed Tiller, Minister, officiating. Master Sergeant Retired James Marvin Yoder

Obituary:
James Marvin Yoder, 72, of Farmville went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 25. James was born on August 26, 1939 in Charleston, West Virginia to the late Millard and Katherine (Scarberry) Yoder. He died peacefully in the arms of family, with the support of many friends after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

James graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy in 1957 and joined the Army where he valiantly served our country until his retirement in 1978. He began his second career in 1980 with the Department of Corrections and retired for the second time in 2002. He loved farming, fishing and traveling with his lovely wife, Vada Ilene Yoder. James was a long-time member of the Maranatha Baptist Church.

James was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Vada Ilene; their children, Kim Lang Yoder (Le'), Patricia Hurt (Jimmy), Eugene Lester, Wilma Jean Altice (Richard), and Jerry Howerton, as well as 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Brothers Kenneth Yoder (Sharon) of Tornado, WV, Harold Yoder of Georgia as well as boyhood friends Ronny Williams and Bob Blair of Charleston, West Virginia and good friend Don Campbell of Keysville, VA also survive him.

David Curtis Parris, Jr., 90, of Bourbon County, died Wednesday, 2 May 2012 in Paris, Kentucky as a result of complications from Parkinson's Disease. Parrish was born 14 May 1921 in Bourbon County, the fourth son to the late Stella Adams Parrish and David Curtis Parrish. He was predeceased by brothers, Thomas Douglas Parrish, William Hockaday Parrish, Rodes Shackelford Parrish, James Leslie Parrish, and a sister, Laura Lee Parrish. On 25 August 1945, he married Susan Taylor Hyde of West Hartford, Connecticut. Parrish was educated in the Paris School system and was graduated from Paris High School in 1940. He then attended Greenbrier Military College, Lewisburg, West Virginia. From there he entered the United States Army Air Force at the beginning of World War II. After obtaining his flight wings and further training, he entered the European Theatre as a P-47 pilot with the 396th Fighter Squadron 368th Fighter Group. Flying initially from England as escort to bombers over Germany, later he would fly missions in support of ground troops during the D-Day invasion. His group transferred to France shortly after D-Day participating in strafing attacks on German defensive positions. For his efforts during this time he was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with 5 oak leaf clusters. He returned to the states in January 1945 and served in pilot instruction at Naples and Fort Myers, Florida, until discharge in the summer of 1945. Parrish was a lifelong resident of Bourbon County where he was a founding member of The Clay Ward Agency in 1961 and Indian Creek in 1971. He was past-president of the Paris Rotary Club, the Paris-Bourbon County YMCA, The Thoroughbred Club of America, and The Kentucky Lloyd's Agent Association. In 2009, Parrish was named to the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame. A lifelong farmer, he greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening and following The University of Kentucky athletic teams. Parrish is survived by his wife of 66 years, Susan Hyde Parrish. He is also survived by a son, Rodes Shackelford Parrish and daughters, Helen Parrish Beach and Leslie Parrish Isaacs; grandchildren, Susan Taylor Beach Moloney, Charles Beach IV, David Parrish Isaacs, and William Stewart Isaacs; and great granddaughters, Catherine Elliott Moloney and Caroline Fielding Moloney. Visitation will be at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Paris, KY, Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday May 7, 2012 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Paris, KY, with burial to follow at the Paris Cemetery. LEWISBURG — Richard Lee “Rick” Skaggs II, 60, of Lewisburg, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Born November 20, 1951, in Ronceverte, Rick was the son of Virginia Craggs Skaggs of Lewisburg and the late Richard Lee “Dick” Skaggs.

Rick was Owner of Quick Essentials in Lewisburg, former owner of Park Grove Farms Feed Store and Mountaineer Bump Shop was a member of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, and was a member of Richlands Ruritan Club.

Other than his father, Rick was preceded in death by son-in-law Greg Carter.

Survivors include wife Mary Lou Skaggs of Lewisburg; mother Virginia S. Skaggs of Lewisburg; daughter Melissa Skaggs Carter of Lewisburg; stepdaughter Suzanne Brown of Maxwelton; stepgrandson Tyler Caldwell of Maxwelton; sister Ginnie (Dan) Glick of Clarksville, MD; brother Kim (Debbie) Skaggs of Richmond, VA; Melissa’s mother Nanette Skaggs of Lewisburg; aunt Barbara Braun of N.J.; uncles Bill Russell of Lewisburg and Douglas Craggs of Baltimore, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

Rick was a graduate of Greenbrier East High School and was a post graduate student at Greenbrier Military school in 1970

Service will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Dexter Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Rosewood Cemetery.

JAMES KALAAUALAOKUAKINI WOOLSEY, JR., 81, of Kaneohe, died at home on April 4, 2012. He was born in Honolulu and grew up in Manoa. He was the oldest and only surviving son of his predeceased parents James K. and Henrietta Hughes Woolsey. He attended Manoa Elementary, Punahou School and graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy. He achieved the highest rank as a cadet major at Greenbrier. He received a football scholarship to attend Marshall College in West Virginia and also attended University of Hawaii.

His college was interrupted by the Korean War so he joined the Navy and served on the USS Roanoke. At the time of his passing he was Post Commander of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Board member of Oahu One Federal Credit Union and Hawaii Funeral and Cemetery Association.

He was an entrepreneur and most recently was co-owner of Woolsey Mortuary Services and Woolsey Funeral & Cemetery Services. He was active in many clubs, organizations, and societies, contributing exemplar service to all.

He is survived by wife, Ida Kahaumeliala Mesquita; sons, Thomas “Tommy” and Harry Woolsey, Jeffrey, Richard, Antonio and Pono Ledford; daughters, Danna Mae Keanu and Anela Woolsey; grand-children Jordan, Justin, Sierra Lynn, Jonah, Clorissa Estrella, Spencer, Christopher, Whitney, Alyssa, Bryson, Ashley, Courtney, Darcey, Kawika and one great grandchild Jordyn; aunt Miriam Reed; brother in law Sandy Smith; sister in law, Toni Makanoa and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Frank H. Batchelor passed away in his home on Windy Ghoul Drive, Beaver, on Thursday, March 29, 2012, the day of his 90th birthday.

Mr. Batchelor was the son of the late Frank M. Batchelor and Aurelia Harvey Batchelor of Monaca. His late siblings were Anne Batchelor Steege and William Batchelor. He leaves his wife, Carin Mommendey Batchelor; sons, Frank and his wife Margit of Wellesley, MA and Stuart and his wife Nancy of Burlingame, CA; and four grandchildren, Kristina (Wellesley), Andrea and her husband Ryan Patrico (Providence, RI), Jessica (Denver, CO) and Christopher (Burlingame).

Mr. Batchelor was of the Presbyterian faith. He was born and raised in Monaca, graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy, and received his bachelor's degree from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Army and served with the 398th Regiment of the 100th Infantry Division in Ardennes/Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe. In Germany, during the occupation, he met his future wife. After military service, he joined the family business, Batchelor Bros. Furniture, which he managed until its closure in 2010. Batchelor Furniture was in continuous operation by only two-generations of the family for 114 years since its founding in Monaca in 1896. Stores existed in several locations in Monaca, Rochester, and Baden. The Northern Lights store was an original store when that shopping complex opened. The Beaver Valley Mall store also was among the initial group of tenants there. Additionally, he worked in banking in Monaca with the First National Bank of Beaver County as both its Chairman and President.

Beyond his business-related undertakings, Mr. Batchelor was active in the community. He served as chairman of the Salvation Army of Beaver County, chairman of the Advisory Board of Pennsylvania State University, Beaver Campus, and president of the Board of Trustees of the former Children's Home of Beaver County. He was a recipient of the William Booth award from the Salvation Army honoring his service to that institution. His dedication to these organizations spanned decades.

He and his wife were inveterate international travelers throughout much of his life. They were for many years members of the Beaver Tourist Club.

KEYSER, W.Va. — J. Richard Campbell, 90, of Keyser, died on Friday, March 2, 2012, at his residence.

Born on Aug. 10, 1921, in Dawson, W.Va., he was a son of the late John Lee and Lilly Dale (Woollard) Campbell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Margaret (Hobbs) Campbell on Nov.15, 2011.

Mr. Campbell was a graduate of Smoot High School and a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He continued his education and graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Business Administration, West Virginia Tech. with B.S. in Industrial Arts and Social Studies and West Virginia University with a M.S. in School Administration. He attended Marshall University, Oklahoma State Middle Management, Boston, Massachusetts and Central Connecticut State.

A man of great experience, he taught at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley Greenbrier County Schools, Assistant Principal in Greenbrier County School, Supervisor of Vocational Education, Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons in Danbury, Conn. and taught Apprenticeship Class at Henry Abbot Vocational Technical in Danbury, Conn. He was the first Director of the Mineral County Vocational Technical School and retired in 1984 as Mineral County Superintendent of Schools.

Dick enjoyed hunting, golf, bridge, gardening, practical jokes and especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was Past President, Board of Director and member of Keyser Rotary Club, member of Chamber of Commerce, 50-years member of Davis Lodge 51, AF & AM, Potomac Highlands, Past President and member of Mountaineers for Rural Progress, VFW Post 3518 Nancy Hanks, First United Methodist Church, Chairman of First United Methodist Administrative Council, McKinley Bible Class and United Methodist Men. He was a charter member of Wolf Creek Lodge and the last surviving charter member of the Smoot Ruritan Club. Professional memberships included WVEA, NAASP, AVA and WVFA and Soil Conservation.

Surviving are his children, Mary Hutzler and husband Jim of Alexandria, Va., Tom Campbell and wife Paula, John Campbell and wife Karen, all of Keyser, Dale “Gus” Campbell and wife Cathy of Woodbridge, Va. and Cassandra Campbell of Keyser. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Mara Boggs and husband Ken, Lee Ann Haley and husband Jeremy, Katie Campbell, C. J. Campbell, Clint Campbell and wife Anna, Tandi Smith, Amy Smith, Scott Smith, Lindsey and Stephanie Campbell; and four great-grandchildren, Arabella Boggs, Cole Boggs, Lyla

Harold B. SNYDER Jr.

SNYDER, Harold B. Jr., Colonel, U.S. Army, (retired) A Bethlehem, Pa. native, Buz Snyder graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1956 as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He declined prestigious engineering offers to commit to a career in the Army. Following the Basic Infantry Officer's Course, he attended and completed the Army's Ranger Course and Flight School. In May, 1957, he married Varina native and graduate of Hollins College, Nelda R. Wood. Throughout his distinguished Army career, he was blessed with challenging assignments in command and staff in seven states, the District of Columbia, and five countries abroad. His last active duty assignment as Commandant of the VMI Corps of Cadets was his most cherished. An expert in military aviation he earned a Masters in Aerodynamics from Georgia Tech and graduated from the Navy War College. Colonel Snyder was a decorated combat veteran and Master Aviator with numerous awards including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Army Air medals. After completing 28 years of continuous, active military service he retired to Eastern Henrico County in September, 1984. Buz remained very active the last 28 years in civic affairs as member and past president of the VMI Club of Richmond, member and past president of the Varina Lions Club, member and Chairman of the J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College Board, and member of the Old Dominion Eye Foundation Board, the James River Association and the Richmond Audubon Society. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nelda; and two sons, Hal (Kathy) of Frederick, Md. and Chip (Kim) of Eden, N.C.; six grandchildren, Margot, Chase, Hunter, Kristin, Keely and Conor; a sister, Martha Tom of Fresh Meadows, N.Y.; a sister, Johanna Staub of Francestown, N.H.; a brother, Thomas of Edmonton, Alberta; and a sister, Elizabeth Knight of Gladwyne, Pa. Burial is private. Friends are invited to join the family for a remembrance reception on Sunday, February 26, from 2 - 5 p.m. at The Nelsen Reception Center, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Richmond, Va. 23231. A memorial gathering will also be held on May 5, (details forthcoming) in conjunction with the 20th annual Varina Lions Club Canoe-A-Thon of which Buz was the founding father. Buford Dennis Hepler '66

Buford Dennis Hepler, 64, formerly of Oswego and currently residing in Winthrop, NY passed away on Tuesday January 17, 2012 at University Hospital.

Dennis was born in Rome, NY where he was raised and educated. He was a 1966 graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Mr. Hepler was a proud US Army Veteran serving in the Vietnam War. Dennis helped many people, especially veterans, employed by various agencies as a counselor for many years. He also assisted the Canadian Government in helping establish their PTSD Program for Veterans.

Surviving is his son, Dennis B. Hepler and Patricia Neri of Liverpool, and a grandson, Brian C. Hepler.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 from 4 to 7pm at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners 3541 Rte. 31 Baldwinsville, NY. Military honors will be conducted at 7:00 pm. Services and burial will private at the convenience of the family.

Robert Elwood Erwin, 85, passed away Saturday December 24, 2011 in Vienna, WV. He was born November 13, 1926 in Lewisburg, WV, a so of the late Joseph R and Lessie Wood Erwin.

Robert was a graduate of Lewisburg high School and also attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg. He is surbived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Wells Erwin; two sons David Jefrey of Alton, IL, and Richard Well ofTyrone, GA., and several grandchildren and neices and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, December 29 at St. Pauls United Methodist Church and the body was inturned in Evergreen North Cemetery wuth full military rites.
